Chapter 2 - Chapter 1

"Bang! Bang! Tch!Tch!" seems like someone's being clumsy and I bet it's my little brother. I almost shouted Simon stop being a clown when I remembered where I was,an orphanage with other kids. My name is Avaline Raven Smith and I'm a 14 year old who lost her world and family in a month. Not long ago I was your usual happy teenager but now I'm nothing but a miserable mess. Clearing that thought away I picked up my only source of sanity and entertainment,a novel, Grief Child by an African author, Lawrence Darmani. I liked this book mainly because the boy in the story is/was in the same predicament as I. We were both orphans in a new environment.

I sighed as I closed the book and laid on my bed doing nothing,I was later called down to dinner by Sis. Lucy the caretaker of the orphanage. At the table we did our normal routine which was to pray, after prayers we dug in, finished the food, cleared the table did our remaining chores, went through our hygiene routine and retired to bed.

I was awoken by the chirping of the birds and the ray of the sun. I sighed tiredly as I thought about how miserable my life was. Standing up I stretched my limbs and headed for the bathroom to do my morning routine. Done with my bath I decided on a sleeveless black top with black shorts, putting them on I combed my raven waist length hair and placed it in a high ponytail with a braided strand on each side of my face. Since today was a Saturday I decided to go out and rest in the garden. As I lay down on the grass,I saw an expensive car pull up into the orphanage, and out came a gorgeous couple who looked to be in their late thirties and early forties. I saw them walking up to the front door of the orphanage and knocking on it. Sis. Lucy opened the door after their second knock and gasped at them. This action of hers made the guests chuckle with amusement. Immediately Sis. Lucy called all the children to line up, and they did so in an orderly manner standing from the youngest to the oldest. I stood up quickly and assumed my position in the formation, quickly we greeted the couple with a bow of our heads. After excusing ourselves we all went back to whatever we were doing. I quietly crept back to the garden.

Janice's POV

"Your dad and I are going out so I want you all to be on your best behaviour,ok!"

"Yes mother" they replied each with a grin. I smiled and went to hug them but my husband's voice refrained me from doing so,"Janice they'll be fine, now let's go.". "Coming Dylie" . We hurriedly got into the car and drove to St. Mary's Orphanage. St Mary's Orphanage was the orphanage Dylie and I have been supporting, and today we were going to check on how things were going. We reached the open gates of the orphanage and entered. I saw something laying down on the grass but dismissed the thought as Dylie got down,I followed suit and we knocked on the door of the orphanage. After our second knock a familiar face opened up and Sis.Lucy gasped at our sudden appearance, my husband and I chuckled at her with amusement. When she found her tongue she called all the children to line up and they did so in an orderly manner standing from the youngest to the oldest,as they were forming a pretty girl of about age 14 quickly stood up from the garden and joined them quickly. They all bowed their heads in a form of greeting and quickly scurried away after excusing themselves. From my line of vision I saw the pretty girl return back to the garden.
