Mary watched as Chloe stomped on her glasses. "My glasses!" Mary shouted. "Oh! Please, it's not like those disgusting cheap things made you look any better," Chloe snickered, "Too bad you're not like those nerd girls in the movies, no matter what you do, you'll always be a walking piece of trash."
Mary clenched her fists, "Just let it go, and move on," she thought trying to calm herself down, she bent down to try and pick up the remnants of her glasses only to be shoved from behind. Mary landed face-first in the pieces of her broken glasses, she screamed as multiple shards of the lenses cut into her face. "Aw, does the wittle baby wanna cwy?" Chloe mocked, "You should be thanking me, this is such a big improvement, hahaha!".
Mary looked up towards Chloe and then all around them, there were dozens of students walking past, all acting as though they had seen nothing, but she knew, she could tell they had seen her suffering but they had chosen not to do anything, all because Chloe's parents were rich and famous. Mary then spotted someone walking among the crowd, it was Ally, a girl she had just recently befriended. "She would try to help me, wouldn't she?" Mary thought with a glimmer of newfound hope, but as soon as their eyes met, Ally looked in the opposite direction and continued walking on. "Of course she didn't," Mary sighed inwardly, "Who would help an ugly poor girl like me?". But as much as Mary tried to deny the fact, watching Ally walk away still hurt her more than she would have liked, the pain growing in her chest felt far greater than the shards lodged in her face, her emotions got the better of her and tears started streaming down her face.
"Aw, you poor thing," Chloe teased, "Hm, it's still missing something..... I know!". Chloe grabbed the gum she had been chewing and stuck it inside Mary's hair. "There, now you look like the filthy piece of garbage that you are, toodles." Chloe snickered as she walked away. Mary just lay there on the ground, she had stopped crying, her eyes now looked void and lifeless, her mind had gone numb and negative thoughts started to seep into her head.
"Why does the world hate me so much? Why must I be left to suffer? Always alone, always shunned, always rejected, all because I'm not pretty or rich, all because I have no one to protect me and no one to run back to, is it really my fault? Am I the problem?"
Mary could not even feel the shards still lodged in her face anymore, she wiped the tears from her face and got up, as she walked home, all she could feel was darkness growing inside her.
When Mary reached her home, she did not even take time to dread the pitiful state of her apartment as she usually would, she walked straight to the cracked mirror in her bathroom and started pulling out the shards from her face, her emotion unwavering wavering, she then grabbed the old pair of scissors lying on the sink and cut her hair.
Mary stared blankly at her reflection; the image distorted by the crack, she hated what she saw. "Maybe I should just end it all," Mary said as she played with the scissors, "I'm sure no one would miss me, unlike that Chloe, I'm sure lots of people would miss her, all those people who shunned and rejected me, they love her."
As Mary thought about this, she realized, she was not the problem, the people, they were the ones that ignored all the suffering she had gone through, they disregarded her and treated her like trash, but they loved Chloe, even though she was the bane of all that suffering. "Those people, they're the problem, how could they just leave me to suffer and.. and... that Chloe, she's the one who caused all of this, she's the reason they now can't see me as anything other than trash," Mary thought, she could feel her resentment for Chloe grow more and more, her thoughts kept getting darker, she wanted to act upon these feelings, to act upon the one who had caused her unhappiness, she wanted revenge on Chloe.
The next day, Chloe found a note in her bag reading,
"Meet me in the Chemistry Lab.
XXX
-Adrian"
"Ha! I knew it was only a matter of time before Adrian realized the chemistry between us," Chloe exclaimed extravagantly.
As Chloe walked into the Chemistry Lab, the door was shut behind her and a metal bar stuck her in the back of the head making her fall forehead-first onto the floor. "Hey! What gives?" Chloe grunted as she massaged the bump that was started to form on her forehead. "You should be thanking me, this is such a big improvement," Mary said as she started walking towards Chloe.
When Chloe looked at Mary's face, she could barely recognize her; her face was full of clots and her hair was short and messy but the most distinct thing about her in that moment were her eyes, they looked wild and hungry. Chloe could tell that Mary was not the same, every bone in her body was telling her that the person standing in front of her was dangerous. Chloe tried to run out of the room but Mary kicked her back down and slapped her across the face, "You think you can run, no, you must suffer for your injustice," Mary said in a monotone tone.
Chloe started to tear up, the look in Mary's eyes and her actions had made her whole body start to shiver in fear, she was too scared to even try and fight back. Chloe tried to crawl away but Mary kicked her in the back. "Please! Don't hurt me, I promise I'll never bother you again," Chloe pleaded, but instead of pacifying Mary, that statement just made her feel angrier, she tightened her grip around the metal bar and slammed it into her face. Mary looked at Chloe, her face now with a cut running along the side of her cheek, but it did not satisfy her. Mary wanted to see Chloe suffer more, she whacked her in the face over and over until it was nothing but a collage of cuts, bruises and blood. Mary was panting heavily as she stopped her attack and dropped the metal bar, she could still hear faint cries coming from Chloe who was desperately trying to cling onto consciousness. Mary walked to a cabinet at the side of the room, opened it and picked up a glass bottle with a clear substance inside. Mary walked back to Chloe, who was still lying on the floor, "You deserve no pity," she scoffed as she started to drop the substance onto Chloe's face. Chloe gave out a choked scream as the substance landed on her face. The screams were not enough, Mary wanted more, she emptied the entire bottle's contents onto Chloe's face. A loud scream was heard, followed by silence.
Mary looked down at Chloe's now motionless body and her unrecognizable face, she did not feel resentful for what she had done, but neither did she feel happy, all she felt was darkness.
