Gilbert has still redeemed the killer instincts had to let go of. His first murder in the barracks was that of his commander who failed to give him the respect he felt entitled to.
The commander was new as the former commander retired. He didn't know how things were in this barracks and was shocked to see the amount of power Gilbert wielded. When the other soldiers ran 40 laps, Gilbert only ran ten. When other soldiers were given fieldwork, Gilbert was exempted. He was given the largest portion of food, a room of his own, and servants at his beck and call.
The commander being the righteous man he was, called him out on one of their training days to scold him for his proud behavior. When Gilbert then talked back at him, the commander had the disciplinary committee punish him.
