Ayoub was very excited for the near future. His first high school year will start in two weeks and he simply couldn't keep his expectations at bay. Compared to his friends, Ayoub always dreamt of being a high schooler and enjoying all its perks such as the more freedom you get and the idea of having a high school sweetheart, but most importantly, the fact that this change of lifestyle could at least help him get over the passing of his father.
Ayoub lived in the outskirts of Tetouan city, with his family that consisted of his father, mother and three siblings. Their house was a mansion that was around 200 square meters. However the question that always bugged his mind was how could his parents afford such a place, let alone being able to pay the damage costs caused by his drunkard brother Ayman that always seemed to break something somewhere. Especially since his mother was a house wife and his father an accountant. Whenever he asks his mother she always dodges the question... As for his father, he never really asked him about it since their relationship wasn't that good.
Ayoub spent all his summer vacation either playing video games on his laptop or taking care of the family cat Soula, which actually looked more like a reptile than a cat due to the luck of fur. He never understood why his father really had adopted it. It wasn't really a playful cat and most certainly it wasn't cute.
When summer was almost over, his father got badly sick. It seemed as if he was aging at a fast pace. He reached the point where he couldn't even leave his bed to take care of nature's call. He kept getting worst and worst and when they consulted a doctor, he simply told them that there was nothing wrong with him physically and so he basically couldn't help him.
Ahmed's age should be around fifty years old, however, right now, he looked like he was at least in his seventies. While everyone found it hard to comprehend, Ahmed seemed to find what is happening to him completely normal.
His health kept deteriorating day after day, until one evening, he called the members of his family to speak with them one last time. In about five minutes, everyone was surrounding Ahmed but Ayman.
"He is not answering my calls" Said Aya, Ayoub's twin sister.
"He is probably probably passed out in some alley way or something" said Maria, his big sister.
Ahmed handed a letter to his wife which contained his will, and asked her to read it out loud. When she finished reading it, every one was in awe. All what they knew about their father's proprieties was this mansion. So when they saw that he left to Maria a farm somewhere near the canal, a car to his brother Ayman and a famous store in the city to his sister Aya, they all found it extremely hard to believe. But what really shocked Ayoub was that while every single person of his family got something expensive, his father had left him one thing and one thing only, Soula.
"Why wouldn't you give me something of worth like my siblings? And why would you give me this creature that you know very damn well that I don't like!" Sure, his relationship with his father wasn't great, however it also wasn't that bad either.
And while he knew it was inappropriate to say such a thing to someone who is in his death bed - especially if that person is his own father - he couldn't help but wonder why would he do such a thing.
Ahmed change his facial expression to what appeared to be a smirk and decided to tell him the truth after all. "This cat is actually special. When the time comes, it will... " he stopped abruptly. When they checked his pulse they found none. And so, his father died, leaving behind him sobbing faces and a wondering face, that face belonged to no other than Ayoub, he kept thinking about his father's last words.
