When dinner was over, I helped mom clean everything up and wash the dishes. Dad was sitting with the Alphas in the living room, and it looked like they were watching a football game or something. The tension was still in the air, but it wasn't around mom. She seemed like she was giddy in life, and nothing could ruin it. Maybe it would be good to ask her what was going on.
"Mom, what's going on?" I asked her softly, "why is there so much tension in the air?"
Mom stilled for a moment, but she didn't meet my eyes, "that's not something I can talk to you about. It's not my place."
"That doesn't make any sense if it involves me." I grumbled, drying the dish in my hands, "I don't see why I can't know."
Mom sighed, "Kai, it's just not my place to tell you. I promise that soon, you will know exactly why I didn't tell you?"
"Does it have anything to do with Gio calling me 'mate'?" I questioned her skeptically.
I wasn't really expecting a reaction to that, but my words startled her so bad to the point that she dropped the plate in her hand into the sink, but luckily it didn't break. I raised an eyebrow at her, wondering where that had come from. Mom cleared her throat, looking visibly uncomfortable, before she motioned me away with the flick of her hand.
"Go and be in there with the Alphas and your father. I will handle this on my own." Mom said, ignoring what I had just asked her.
I wanted to push her on it, but I decided against it, "okay."
I set the dish down so it would dry and then I turned around and left the kitchen, not understanding what was going on, but I knew it had to do with something about Gio calling me mate. What else could it be? But does that mean just Gio sees me as a potential mate or does Kit see it as well? Was that what Kit wanted to talk to dad about me becoming their mate? Am I the reason they want to stay here in town for the next couple days to convince me that I should give them a shot?
I mean, who wouldn't give them a shot? They are handsome, up in ranks, and they do seem to be pretty nice. Anybody would be lucky to have the Alphas so much as glance at them. And here, they might be wanting me to become their mate...
The worry started to settle in thought as much as I tried to fight it. What if I was misreading things and I end up embarrassing myself if the Alphas did not intend to potentially have me as a mate? What if Gio had just accidentally called me mate since he is unmated and didn't mean to say it? What if they get mad at me if I assume wrong and I get punished for it? There's too many negatives, and why would the Alphas want me to be their mate? I'm nothing too special...
Maybe it's just best to leave it alone and not mention it. I let out a deep breath that I didn't realize I was holding and I shook off the unwanted thoughts, putting on a brave face. Yes, that's it. I'm not going to worry about it nor am I going to mention it. If they want me to be their mate and that is the case, then I will wait for them to say something. Until then, I will just keep my mouth shut. That seemed to be the best plan.
When I walked into the living room, I was surprised to see dad and Kit up in each other's faces. Kit's expression was calm and collected, but I could tell that dad was on the verge of shifting. His eyes were blazing, his claws and fangs had extended, and he was growling uncontrollably. Gio stood off to the side, leaning against the wall and his arms were crossed over his chest.
"Dad, what's going on?" I demanded, marching forward.
In the blink of an eye, Gio had crossed the room and put his arms around me in a protective way, keeping me far away from dad. I looked up at Gio, confused beyond belief because it really looked like dad was about to attack Kit. Kit looked at me slightly, and gave me a reassuring smile.
"Dad?" I said once more, hoping to catch his attention.
Dad's eyes locked with mine, and I could tell he was pissed, but I could see the fear clearly in his eyes. Not much scared my dad so whatever it was, it must've been something big. But as dad looked at me, I could slowly see the anger start to dissipate and his fangs and claws retracted. Dad let out a deep sigh, shaking his head.
"Okay, Alpha." Dad murmured, so low I almost didn't hear him, "but in the long run, it is his decision. Am I clear?"
Kit nodded, a gleam in his eyes that could send shivers through the spine, "of course. You have my word."
Dad eyed Kit suspiciously before he turned to me, glaring at Gio's arms around me, "well, Kai, please take the Alphas up to the spare bedroom. And then you may head to bed. Alright?"
I nodded, and Gio released me from his arms. Dad turned around and stared out the window, looking like he was lost in thought. I motioned Kit and Gio to follow me upstairs, and without another word, they followed me. Once we reached the spare bedroom, I opened the door and stepped aside so that they could go inside. Gio walked in, but Kit turned to me in the doorway, and I froze slightly when he reached out and stroked my cheek, his hand warm and large against my face.
"Goodnight, Kai." Kit murmured gently.
"Goodnight." I whispered.
I turned on my heel and headed to my bedroom. I could feel Kit's eyes on me until I made my way into my bedroom, closing the door behind me. I stripped off my clothes, put down my hair and took off the light bit of makeup on my face. I changed into a large t-shirt and boxers before I crawled into bed, pulling the covers over my body. I settled into the bed, and closed my eyes, slowly drifting asleep.
From this day forth, my life is going to change forever.
