Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Defiance

"ZOMBIE HORDE!"

One of the sentries shouted one of the things that nobody, no matter if they were in the capital city or a small town like this one, wanted to hear in their lifetime.

Zombies were weak most of the time, laughably so. I spent weeks exterminating them so they wouldn't cause a ruckus on the outskirts but the fact is that they can be killed or at least immobilised by anyone who knew the smallest degree of self defence or knew how to use any type of weapon, even a dagger.

This meant that by themselves, they posed a minimal threat. They were corpses that, due to some dark magic and failed burial rites, were brought up from the dead to seek revenge against the living, often mindlessly.

So, in general, they didn't pose much of a threat even in groups of three or four but, as I looked out towards the rapidly growing mob, everybody knew that this was definitely not one of those cases.

A zombie horde was no laughing matter. They devoured anything in it's way once started, almost like a tidal wave they would wash away anything that it comes into contact with.

However, to have that many zombies to appear at once was a once-in-a-lifetime event. Most people never witness something like this because they are usually so spread out so in a way, we were witnessing history.

"Yeah, no. I want to remember history, not freaking turn into history!"

"FIRE!"

The sentries up on the tower started to pepper the mob with arrows. Pulling back their bowstrings until they were taut and then releasing them into the ever-growing horde of red eyes in the darkness of night.

Some of them fell, making others trip over the fallen bodies mindlessly and crash down onto the ground. However, that didn't do enough as for every zombie that fell, more took it's place.

I wasn't sticking around to find out what was going to happen. I ran back the way I came while the whiz of arrows that flew past me and hit the zombies made me cringe a bit. I like my head thank you very much.

At this point, most of the town residents noticed what was going on. Screams of men, women and children alike were ringing through the streets as many of them retreated into their homes.

I ran past the panicking crowd, back to where all of the guards had finally noticed that something was wrong. They confusedly looked on at the panicking mob before focusing on me.

I can't believe these are the guards of the town.

"What the hell do you guys think you're doing!? There's a zombie horde coming in right now!"

They stared at me, not talking or even reacting to what I said. They looked like they were still stunned and processing the information that I presented so suddenly.

"Z-zombie horde?"

One of them finally broke out of their stupor and responded with a shaky voice, almost questioning my proclamation.

"Yes you idiots, that tidal wave that's about to kill 200 people!"

That was when they finally noticed the incoming horde of decaying and rotting flesh. They had finally separated from their tangle on the ground and spread out, making the job of the sentries nearly impossible. They tried to take more of them down but since it was the middle of the night, as well as them being undead, only a small amount of them were going down.

They started nearing the gate that I had actually closed behind me, which they started to climb. They had also finally reached the sentry tower, with the sentries on the tower attempting to aim downwards but were ultimately obscured by their limited vision.

"We need to retreat into the inner are of town, round up everybody you can and make a run for it. We just need to survive until morning and then the undead will retreat back into the forest!"

Once given clear instructions, they set out to work.

"Alright, all or nothing it's time to get off your lazy bums and actually do something!"

They started to spread out around the town. They had a better chance against the undead than the unarmed, defenceless townspeople so they advanced forwards, the steel of their swords and spears at the ready to counter the invasion of the monsters.

However, that wavered a bit as they saw the first guard tower go down. They saw the unfortunate sentry attempt to clamber upwards but unfortunately fall down into the waiting horde.

"URK!"

One of the guards near me went into a nearby bush and puked his guts out as the man that fell got absolutely gnawed like a chew toy. And that was when we saw it happen.

The man, who was now covered with bite marks, opened his eyes again. However, just like Dillon and the other guard, they were completely red as the man foamed from the mouth before rushing towards the advancing guards, startling everybody.

"Get him!"

I didn't really understand why, but he wasn't walking or crawling like normal zombies. He was actually running full speed at the crowd of confused guards like a normal person, arms outstretched to surely tear the throat out of the first person he got his hands on which was about to be the guard at the head of the charge, which was me.

"Urgh!"

I put my blade in front of me just in time, as the sentry-turned-zombie pounced on me. I put the metal right between their teeth, which I could see had elongated and turned knife-sharp. I struggled on the ground as the zombie tried to go in for the bite.

"HYUP!"

I kicked the zombie in the stomach, throwing it backwards before and making it stumble. Catching my breath a bit, I stared at what was just another human being minutes ago. It was absolutely disgusting now, bite marks and wounds all over.

"Don't blame me for this!"

I stomped on it's chest before it had the chance to get up and, with all the strength I had, stabbed it right through the eyes and all the way through its head. Though it was wearing armour, the head was always the most vulnerable.

It shrieked as it clawed at my blade in it's head, trying to remove it, before its hand fell limp and twitched. That was when I removed my blade as it twitched a few more times before finally becoming still at last.

I wiped the sweat off my brow as I surveyed the grim situation, stomping on it's head one more time just to be safe. Nearby, many guards had started to become overwhelmed with the sheer number of zombies on them. As they hacked and stabbed away, some fell but more took their places.

However, no matter how much resistance they put up, the zombies smacked their shields to the side and bit a good number of them. They proceeded to twitch on the ground before twisting, turning and then clambering up again.

"We need to retreat! Everyone outside the walls or done for, we need to retreat back!" Charles called out, bashing one of the zombies backwards before crushing its skull with his shield.

Out of the initial 30 guards, only 5 remained. The rest had all gotten overwhelmed, joining the ranks of the undead. Whoever hid in their homes were soon dealt with as well, flimsy wooden doors being broken down by the zombies claws and strength.

I looked left and right as the guards were herding what few people were left towards the walled part of the town. Of the original number, less than 10% of the townspeople were left. Jacob and Charles were both still here but many others weren't.

I panted as I finally reached the gate, too tired to care about anything in the world. Nearly everybody who was still alive had made it through, which finally gave everyone a break.

"Wait, has anyone seen Abigail?"

The people present shook their heads at my question, Jacob spoke up.

"We haven't seen her at all, she might've been part of the sentries that were defending this place. I...I think you should probably get to safety right now"

As the horde neared our position, I could see Jacob and Charles trying to drag me behind the walls. But I really didn't feel it, the sounds of the groans and growls drowned out by a kind of numbness I can't explain.

Wordlessly, I shook their grasp and turned to face the growing crowd of flesh-eating monsters. I gripped my sword in one hand as I exhaled, if she was gone, that meant everything was gone.

"If I die, close the gate"

"Well, looks like I'm in quite a pickle here"

I drew another arrow back, pulling the bowstring next to my face before releasing it, nailing the nearest zombie in the face. This caused it to fall of the tower while also knocking a few down with it. I knew for a fact that the tower was definitely going down.

One of them clambered on to the platform before being sent plummeting down courtesy of my boot, if it could scream it would but I figured that it's vocal cords had already rotted away at this point.

I glanced downwards at the clambering zombies before shrugging, my boyfriend knew the risk he was taking by dating me so if I die...well it probably should be expected.

Grabbing one of my arrows, I lifted it up and stabbed it right through one of the zombies hands. I quickly kicked it's head to the side, snapping its neck and effectively putting it down.

The tower itself was already cracking and breaking, the wooden structure wasn't built to withstand such a huge weight and no matter what I did, it would break.

I pulled the body of the now dead corpse up and held it by the foot before glancing down. It really wasn't that high up, around 5-6 meters, but landing the wrong way would definitely destroy the bottom half of my body.

"Well, all or nothing. I'm not going down like this!"

At this, I jumped off the tower with the corpse. With an arrow stuck in it's hand and the fact that it was a relatively small guard tower, the force of me tipping the tower to one side as well as the already crumbling base structure it started to tip over.

The zombies, now noticing that I was dangling over all of them climbed over each other to try and reach me, which I was not a fan of.

"C'mon you bastard, OUF!"

I kicked off from the wooden railing and that was the final movement needed for the whole thing to finally fall over and crash down onto the horde that had gathered under me.

The falling wooden structure absolutely crushed everything that was under me while I was thrown off of my convenient jungle rope and landed right onto one of the zombies back first.

Luckily, this was one of the ones that were very dead, so I somehow resolved that whole situation.

I dusted myself off and looked at my handiwork and whistled.

"Sheesh, I got something to brag about this time if I make it out of here alive. Speaking of which.."

I glanced at the retreating guards, there were so few of them left that they just looked like armed civilians instead of an actual military force, but more importantly I needed to get to the walls.

Running past the hordes going for the centre I ducked and weaved through their ranks. It was important to note that, once they were concentrated on something, nothing else would ever distract them so they just let me go by without even turning.

Most of the buildings outside had been destroyed, residents pried from their homes and turned into more abominations. I was so glad that my parents weren't here, so now the only thing that I had to worry about was my boyfriend, who hopefully wasn't among the dead here because that would really suck.

"Abagail, where are you!? I know you're not dead, get over here!"

"We can't hold on any longer, we have to close the gate right now!"

"But she-"

"I what?"

At this point I decided to step in and emerge to the front of the horde. I waved towards them with a small smile.

"Abby?"

I didn't answer him as I grabbed him by the back of his shirt and tossed him through the gate, tumbling to safety.

I inhaled before looking around.

"So whose still alive?"

Hopefully this series will live but so far, probably not. I'll continue to write my other stories at a future date because of my finals but I'll update this one at least a few more times before then.
