Nadine smiled, so sickly sweet that I was sure I might puke. I watched my little sister struggle against her grip, whimpering when Nadine gave her a warning growl. Damien looked proud of his wife, giving her a wink. They both disgusted me to no end.
"How did you find us?" I asked.
Nadine's laugh twinkled lightly through the air. "Silly boy, we've always known where you are."
I felt a chill that made my skin crawl. "But, that's impossible!" I argued. "We've both been disconnected with you for years."
"No, you haven't!" Damien laughed at me, like I was a stupid child. "We've just done a very good job at hiding ourselves from you."
"Y-you mean β?"
"We could've come for our lovely children any time we wanted." Nadine giggled. "We decided it would be more fun to see what adventures you two found yourselves on."
"It was quite boring for a while." Damien gave Edith a hard pinch on her cheek. "Then, this little monster went and made things exciting again!"
"Then, there was that little number he pulled into the alley." Nadine giggled before quickly covering her mouth. "Oh, I'm sorry! Did Sylvia not know about that?"
"All I did was feed." I shook with leashed anger.
"Love, we could feel your guilt. You were always so soft." She purred, sounding absolutely bored with me. She suddenly raised her nose to the air, smirking to her husband.
"I smelled it, too." Damien winked at her. "The first time is always the sweetest." He turned to me, a lewd expression on his face. "So, how was she, son?"
"Brother!" Edith's whimper interrupted us. Her voice broke my heart as she tried to reach for me.
"It's okay, Edie. Just stay calm." I reassured her.
"Naughty girl," Nadine scolded her, "Mummy told you to be quiet!"
She raised her hand to strike my sister. Before I could do anything, Sylvia stepped around me.
"Don't you dare hurt her!"
Sylvia's voice held such ferocity, it even shocked my parents. I could feel waves of courage, strength, and determination radiating from her. This beautiful warrior was steeling my resolve without even knowing it.
Damien's shock melted into a proud smile. "I knew she was special."
"Such a fire she has." Nadine tossed my sister to the ground like a worthless ragdoll.
She scrambled as fast as she could to Sylvia, who held her protectively away from them. I wrapped my arms around them both, never taking my eyes off our captors.
"Sylvie!" My poor sister shook with horrified sobs. "No let them take me!"
"Shh, Edie." She lovingly cooed. "I won't let them have you."
"Her?" Damien sneered. "No, we're done with failures." He smiled, showing off his extending fangs. "We want you."
"No." Sylvia's response was simple, but low and intense.
"Oh, don't be like that, little dove." Nadine cooed. "Just think of it. Power, strength, eternal youth and beauty. How can you say no to that?"
"Oh, that's easy." Sylvia donned a smartass grin. "Just like this: No!"
"My patience is wearing thin, little girl." Damien frowned, casually stepping forward. "Either you come with us willingly or we take you."
An animalistic growl rumbled deep in my chest. I stepped between them with my my fangs bared.
"Try it. I dare you." I was more than ready to rip this man to pieces.
Damien let out a chuckle, then struck viper quick. My first swing caught his jaw, but next wasn't so lucky. I tried to stop his attack, but I was too slow. Damien's hand buried itself deep into my chest. I barely heard the scuffling behind us or my sister's screams. With a maniacal grin, Damien leaned close to my ear.
"You thought you were strong enough to take me, boy?" He whispered. "You should know better than that."
He ripped his hand from me and let me crumble to the floor. The smell of my blood surrounded me as I began to lose focus. I looked up to see Nadine grabbing Sylvia as Edith ran away. She had blood dripping from a cut on her lip. I opened my mouth to speak, but only a fountain of blood bubbled from my lips.
"Good." Nadine smiled down at me. "He's still awake, love."
"Lucky man! Then he can watch." Damien smiled wickedly.
I watched in horror as his fangs tore into her throat. Her piercing screams of pain were the last things I heard before darkness claimed me.
