Chapter 23 - Getting Closer

Seeing Maya who suddenly turned serious, Evan who was initially annoyed that his number was asked the last finally gave up his idea of going straight away and instead ended up paying attention to what Maya was actually planning. Evan watched as Maya's brows knit together, her expression turning serious, then back into her usual expression. Maya smiled as she looked at Evan again, before showing him the screen of her phone.

"Because you are the most special person in my life, I have listed you as my number one emergency contact. This way, we can contact each other easily Evan."

From what Kevin taught her, Maya knew that emergency contacts could only be filled by people Maya trusted the most. Of all the people Maya knew in this world, only Evan's name Maya could think of. Not only was Evan very kind to her, Maya could also tell that Evan never had any bad intentions even though they were only together because of their own interests. Evan also pays close attention to all her needs. The man made Maya feel she still had someone who cared about her, even if she was just an outsider in this unfamiliar world.

For Maya who was used to living in a world where she had to fight hard just to survive, Evan's little attention was enough to make her feel loved. It doesn't matter even if it's only temporary. Her life at Evan's house, was probably the best experience of her life in both worlds.

When Maya smiled as the girl showed Evan her emergency contact, Evan anger was miraculously washed away when he suddenly became embarrassed by Maya's actions. The girl confidently said that Evan had a special place in her heart. It was like a declaration of love, and Evan wasn't ready to hear it right now.

Evan's hand rose to cover his hot cheeks, while he turned his face away from Maya who was still looking at him with a sweet smile on her beautiful face.

"Just call me before anyone else," Evan said in a low voice. His mind kept screaming that he did that because of his obligations as Maya's future husband. He did it just for the sake of the contract, there was nothing strange about his current actions. But Evan didn't understand why his heart was currently beating fast as if he was embarrassed by what he said. His face heats up even more, as he turns his wheelchair to turn his back on Maya.

"I'll call you."

Evan subconsciously turned his head again as Maya spoke to him with a small smile. The girl's smile slowly turned into a wide smile, as she was sincerely happy with her current achievements.

"This way, we're officially friends right? I'll call you when I need your help. So don't forget to contact me too, if you need my help Evan."

Evan was used to people who liked to pretend in front of him. Those who only pretended to obey when he spoke, those who smiled in front of him but cursed at him behind his back were not unfamiliar sights for the man. Apart from Kevin, it felt like there were only fake people around him all the time. Evan always thought so. So he felt a little strange, when he saw someone could be sincerely happy just because the girl got to know him.

"Let's have breakfast together before I go, Evan. Ah, your body. Does it feel much better now?"

Since Kevin has been busy since this morning to taking care of the files that Maya will need, Evan is alone right now. Maya on her own initiative immediately led Evan to follow her into the dining room, even though the man was still trying to hide his own face. The interaction between them looks more natural now. Where Evan didn't even seem to mind at all when Maya served him out of habit.

Even though Evan's body didn't heal right away, Evan who would normally fall ill almost every day was slowly regaining his strength. Even if he had been in the bath for too long, he wouldn't catch a cold like he used to be. His legs also didn't throb in pain as often as it was before.

At first, Evan only thought Maya's words were just a wishful thinking. But he had experienced the effects himself over the time. The strange food did indeed miraculously have a safe drug-like effect every time he ate it. Evan even went so far as to summon a nutritionist, pharmacist, chemist, and his own doctor to secretly research the food's efficacy. The result is beyond expectation. Just by continuing to eat what Maya made, Evan's body has indeed proven to be improving lately.

Even the doctor himself believed that as long as Evan continued to consume these strange foods, one day the man might actually be able to recover as before. The cells in his body seemed to be regenerating themselves after Evan eats Maya's food regularly. Even his leg, which had been crushed because of the accident, had been starting to heal itself when Evan last examined it.

It wasn't just him, everyone who had tasted Maya's food at his house was miraculously looking very energetic these past days. They all reported the same thing. Their health problems, everything seemed to disappear since they started to participate in tasting the strange food. Now Maya's food is like the main meal at Evan's house. The girl lived a busier life than the main chef of Evan's house, whenever mealtime would come.

Evan watched Maya who was busy helping the maids prepare breakfast for Evan with a deep, complicated look. The man did not intend to ask Maya where a girl like that could get such a magical recipe. But for Maya's own convenience, she had told everyone who had seen Maya's food to shut their mouths for the rest of their lives. Apart from the people at his home and the nutritionist, pharmacist, chemist, and doctor he called at that time, no one else knew that he had a future wife with such mysterious powers. Evan also warned that news of him recovering should not be leaked to the outside. On the outside Evan still looked like a man who could die at any moment, although his body had obviously improved a lot by now.

Evan did all of that to suppress people's suspicions, while protecting Maya in the process. Even though they didn't have a special relationship for now, Evan subconsciously didn't want to see Maya hurt in any way. The emotions he had right now were very strange, difficult to understand, until Evan himself was sometimes frustrated by his own feelings.

One thing Evan knew, he wouldn't let anyone putting Maya in any kind of danger. Evan was determined that he would recover quickly, so that the man could better protect Maya in the future.

The girl had given him hope, when everyone else had given up on him. Maya is his little secret, which Evan will cherish for the rest of his life.

When the embarrassment he had previously felt was gone, Evan began to speak as calmly as usual.

"It doesn't hurt anymore. But that recipe of yours... You shouldn't pass it on to anyone in the future. You won't know... Who could threaten your life in the future just because of that recipe."

Maya pondered Evan's words well. The girl actually believed, that in the future, the human civilization in this world would also be able to find the same medicinal recipe as its food with their own strength. Maya uses the recipe at Evan's house only to repay the kindness of those who have been kind to her at this time. If Evan said he shouldn't pass it on to anyone in the future, Maya could easily agree without any refusal.

"I see. I won't pass it on to anyone else, Evan."

Evan fell silent with satisfaction as Maya obediently listened to his request. After they lived together, Evan finally found out that Maya was actually a very easy person to talk to. Unlike her initial cold and dangerous impression, Maya can also be gentle and talkative towards people she can be comfortable with. Evan had only met Maya at mealtimes so far. But in that short time alone, Maya was always able to make the atmosphere comfortable for them to talk.

Now there is no longer a cold lonely room whenever Maya is there. The man secretly smiled a little. When the man ate his breakfast quietly with Maya in such a pleasant atmosphere.

This peaceful life... Evan couldn't remember the last time he could enjoy something like this in the past.
