like he just vanished out of thin air."
"Then how come you found me, right?"
He sighed. "Because you resemble your mother. It's like the universe wanted to give me a chance to meet you."
"So? What now? Do you plan on going looking for your uncle?"
"Yeah, but he might not be around."
She tilted her head. "How do you know?"
"I heard that he got transferred overseas."
"Transferred overseas?" She widened her eyes. "Where'd he move to?"
"Japan."
"Oh." She paused. "Do you know when his transfer would take place?"
"About two years later. In January."
She bit her lip. "So…two years."
"Yes. Two years."
She let out a soft sigh, hugging herself tightly. "Two years…"
He frowned. "Are you okay?"
She shook her head. "I don't know. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I'I'm worried about you."
"Don't worry about me. If there's one thing I learned from being around your father, it's that you shouldn't worry about someone who seems incapable of taking care of themselves."
She snorted. "Trust me, I know all about that. I was a victim myself once upon a time."
He nodded. "Still, I don't want you to get involved with my situation. Please."
"I understand." She leaned forward, resting her elbows against her knees. "But why me, though? Why did your mom leave you guys behind?"
"For the same reason that mine left me. Because she had cancer."
She nodded. "So you're saying that I'm her replacement."
He gave her a weak smile. "Kind of. I hope that's what you meant by my mother leaving me. Because I really miss her."
A sudden wave of sadness crashed over her. "I miss her too."
He smiled sadly. "Me too."
"Does…does everyone know about this? About my parents?"
"Yeah.I'm worried about you."

"Yeah. They did. My uncle told me that he would protect you until the end of the day. But he made sure that he didn't say anything else. I think he's afraid that you might leave again."
She let out a deep breath. She felt her throat getting tight. She quickly turned away from him, trying her best to hold back tears. She didn't deserve their pity, especially not his. Not after the pain she caused.
"Thank you Taiga," she whispered.
"Huh?"
She looked at him. "For saving me. Thank you for making me believe that I am worthy of love again. And thank you for giving me another shot at life. Without you I wouldn't know about my father's death. Thank you for making sure that I'm safe."
He chuckled. "You're welcome. Now, we can finally rest. We've been working nonstop for weeks now. It's almost midnight. Let's sleep, okay?"
She nodded tiredly. "Okay."
"Good night."
She yawned. "Good night."
She turned off her phoneThey did. My uncle told me that he would protect you until the end of the day. But he made sure that he didn't say anything else. I think he's afraid that you might leave again."

She turned off her phonethrowing it onto the floor next to her. Slowly, she lay down on the bed, closing her eyes.
As her vision started to become dark, she heard the sound of footsteps outside of the room. The door creaked open slowly. A figure stepped inside, glancing around the small room with a suspicious gaze. His hair shined brightly under the moonlight. With his long coat covering his face, only his eyes could be seen. He glanced at Daiyu, whose eyes slowly opened. He took notice of this, frowning lightly.
He walked closer to the girl, sitting beside her on the bed. "So. Who's this?" he asked curiously.
Daiyu sat up, staring straight into his cold gray eyes. "That's none of your concern." Her voice was low and harsh, as if she had been crying.
The man smirked, placing his hand on her cheek. "Actually, I'm pretty curious about it. After all, I'm the one who hired you, after all."
She glared at him, pulling away from his hand. She scowled. "And I'm the one who saved you."
The man shrugged. "True enough." He stood upand pulled on his jacket. "It's late and I need to go home. Thanks for keeping an eye on things while I was gone. See you tomorrow." He headed towards the door.
Before he reached it, he suddenly stopped, turning back towards the young lady. "By the way, I don't appreciate being followed around." Then he quietly closed the door behind him.
Chapter 8
Daiki woke up early the next morning. He sat up in the bed and stretched, yawning widely. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes before standing up and heading for the bathroom to shower and get ready for the day.
After washing up and putting his clothes on, he made his way downstairs. As soon as he arrived in the living room, he noticed his mother standing at the counter, making breakfast.
"Morning Mother," Daiki greeted, walking up to the refrigerator. He grabbed some orange juice and poured some into a glass before grabbing a piece of toast and taking a bite.
"Morning, sweetie," she replied without looking at him.
He sighed. "Mother. What's wrong? You barely look at me anymore."
"I guess I'm just feeling guilty is all.
