A rift has opened- a portal connecting two distinct realities that should never interact. They had seen such events before, and experienced the threat of impending doom they can often bring. They had also, in similarly impossible events, met unexpected allies through these rips in the fabric of reality. However catastrophic these incidents had been, despite the wild inconsistencies in their formation and the unpredictability of the scale each time, they had always followed a simple rule: something would go in, or something would come out. The rift would not persist. There would be no return. Each instance was isolated.
This rift is abnormal, although the subjects are too distracted to notice. A hostile incursion from the other side had occurred and in this chaos, a vessel was kidnapped. It's comrades would not abandon it however, and the fleet was mobilised in a matter of hours to rescue it. Hundreds of warships, ready to counter attack in mere hours! A remarkable display of comradery, yet in the mad rush to recover the lost they have failed to realise one thing. The rule was broken. Nobody has ever witnessed an anomaly such as this until today, the consequences are unknown to all. History is occurring right here in front of my very eyes! They could not comprehend the boundary of science that was just shattered... not that it would matter if the rumours are true.
The rift is expanding. Even those within have realised now. Something is different, the tear is progressing. Within mere days it had doubled in size and suddenly the lost did not matter anymore. A new threat has emerged and the potential for destruction goes beyond a mere ship, and now threatens not only a galactic empire, but maybe even the very universe itself! Of course, they can't (or refuse to) think that far ahead. For now, they were preoccupied in trying to close it, or at the very least slow it down. A rational response, however it will do them no good. The militaristic empire had never bothered to understand the rifts, instead preferring to plan for what would be on the other side. This too, was a rational response, as you cannot further your understanding under the heel of an alien occupation. Yet, it was not enough. Their failure to prepare for the future finally brings consequences.
The rift is multiplying, the threads intertwined throughout the universe have been disturbed, and now the entire fabric of space-time itself is unable to hold itself together. Additional, secondary rifts are emerging, bringing with them the wrath of unknown worlds, confused bystanders and fresh disappearances. Each and every inhabitant of this universe is under siege, beset on all sides by an amalgamation of all that is possible, impossible and everything in between. Of course this is not what endangers their existence, but the question of what the limit of this plague will be. Will these rifts expand, like the original? What happens if one forms inside my ship? In my home? What if one rips through my world, will we be sucked through to the other side, or ripped apart, atom by atom? Throughout the universe, these questions are being asked, and answered in kind.
The rifts now span the entire universe, each and every one causing its own problems in an interconnecting web of doom. The remnants of the empire are as of yet unable to seal the progenitor of this cataclysm. Yet, they may not have to: My analysis suggests that the conflicting realities of rifts interacting with each other is damaging the structure that maintains them, and that soon they may collapse altogether. Perhaps the empire has been encouraging this very phenomenon? I had only anticipated attempts to close the rift, not expecting growth to be its downfall. If that is so, then perhaps they can still save themselves. I will continue to monitor this progression.
Reality is fracturing. I suppose I was half right- the rifts, all grown far beyond their own limits, have simultaneously collapsed. The rip in space they created, however, is not healing. The universe has been completely disassembled into countless, disjointed fragments. This exceeds our expectations- not only that but it surpasses anything we could have even dreamed possible! Each shard of reality lacks the very components it requires to maintain itself, and are slowly imploding upon themselves, utterly destroying everything contained within! Countless lives are slowly being snuffed out before me, their final moments lived with even the light of the stars torn away from them. They would never have understood what happened to them, and would never get the chance to think how they could have stopped it. The only survivors of this destruction are scattered throughout the multiverse, thrown through the rifts into mysterious worlds not knowing the fate of their own. It's remarkable.
The universe has faded, the final light blinked out- finally nothing remains. This experiment is the first step in realising the stability and peace we have all been hoping for. I hereby approve the founding of Soteria and will support your team with whatever you need to see this through. May you save us in place of the false gods. Terminate recording.
