"gee Mr.Andrews, isn't this a little too much?", Ethan said as he saw the shiny chain. They were at Mr.Andrews' house. The latter had changed from his war clothes and was now in normal clothing. Coming over, people had looked at them weirdly. It wasn't everyday one saw a person dressed in full medieval battle gear complete with a weapon. What even caught the attention of people the more was the fact that this person had blood on him. Mr.Andrews had hid his face well so Ethan doubted if anyone had seen him. What had worried him though were the people who had seen him with the bloody man.
He had begun to doubt his own smartness for helping Mr.Andrews. what if someone saw the two dead men in the park after seeing him and Mr.Andrews like this?, Weren't they going to connect the dots and come looking for him?, He had thought. But as if reading his mind, Mr.Andrews had told him that those two he had killed earlier were no ordinary men and that their bodies should have disintegrated awhile ago. Ethan had been confused. Disintegrated? What did Mr.Andrews mean by that?, But once again, Mr.Andrews had read his mind and assured him that he would tell him everything once they got home.
Now they were home, but Mr.Andrews still hadn't told him anything. Instead,he had brought out a shiny chain in the shape of a closed eye and was offering it to Ethan. "Take it Ethan. I can't answer any of your questions until you take this chain.", Mr.Andrews told him. Ethan reluctantly took the chain. "Wow..it's heavy", Ethan said. "It's supposed to be since it's 100% gold", Mr.Andrews said. Ethan's eyes widened with shock as he heard this. "No way...why would you give me a gold chain?, Do you know the value of gold today?". Ethan asked the man perplexed.
"As a matter of fact,I do. But the value of this chain lies far beyond the mineral it was created from." Mr.Andrews replied the boy. "What do you mean sir?", Ethan asked. "This chain holds something far valuable than money Ethan. You need to protect it with your life because if you lose it, you will pay with your life.", Mr.Adrews said seriously which made Ethan take a step back. 'And here I was thinking of selling it to make millions' Ethan sighed inwardly. "Then why not give it to someone else sir?, I'm but only a child." Ethan asked. "I know your situation. Your name came up as one of the people I should give this chain to,but I refused. But after what happened today,I am inclined to since I believe fate wants you to have this accessory." Mr.Andrews answered.
"Okay Mr.Andrews. but where did you get this chain from?, Where did you come from in the sky?, Are you an Angel?, What are you?, What...", "I will tell you everything tomorrow at detention. You should go home now. It's late and I need to rest in order to heal.", Mr.Andrews interrupted Ethan's many questions. "Tomorrow?, At school? Don't you need at least three days to heal those wounds and bruises on your face?" Ethan asked the man in slight disbelief. "You forget, Ethan. I'm not ordinary." Mr.Andrews said with a wink. "Now leave me in peace", Mr. Andrews waved his hand dismissively. Ethan nodded as he turned to leave. But just as he got to the door he realized something and turned back to Mr.Andrews again. "Mr.Andrews, can you at least tell me your name.? Your real name." Ethan asked the man who studied him in silence for about a minute before answering him. "My name...my real name...is Hermes." He said to an indifferent Ethan who just nodded. "See you tomorrow Hermes.", Ethan said before he opened the door and stepped out into the cold night. Outside,he placed the chain around his neck and adjusted it so that his clothes covered the chain. 'i can't let Dred see this.' he said as he made his way towards the direction of his house.
Back in Hermes's room. The protector was laughing his heart out. "Oh my..he doesn't even know who I am. I thought mentioning my name to him would have elicited a reaction from him but by the gods, this boy is as clueless as a Thanksgiving turkey." The protector burst out into another fit of laughter. Boy,would the other protectors get mad if they saw who he had just given all their power to. A clueless child.Ares would be sure to have a fit from anger. Zeus would zap his skin off his bones. But just as this thought crossed his mind, he fell silent again. The others.they were dead. He was sure of it. It was one of the reasons why he decided to give the chain to Ethan.
With the others gone he felt like he had little time to choose and nurture someone to wield the power locked in the chain. Besides, the boy had certain qualities that he admired greatly. Bravery, great curiosity, a fighter, quick decision making. All these had made the boy a worthy candidate in his eyes tonight. The only worrying thing though was his age. And now his absolute ignorance of who or what the protector's were. 'well, I'll just have to teach him much more than I had initially thought.' Hermes thought to himself. He got up from his couch and started walking towards the steps that led up to his bedroom. He made his way up slowly. At the top, he passed a couple of doors before making his way to the last one. He opened the door and stepped into his bedroom. The room was big. In the middle, a large king-size bed stood. To the right side of the bed, a single double seater couch stood with a small table infront of it. To the left of the bed was a walk-in closet and at the foot of the bed, propped up on the far wall was a Tv for his personal entertainment. Hermes walked towards his bed and gently climbed into it.it was time to heal himself. 'i will teach him well my friends', he made a silent promise to his dead friends as he closed his eyes and drifted into a healing sleep.
