Jace's Point of View
I knew Jo was going to beat me up as soon as he got home from his vacation with Marylou. Hit me hard, as usual. But that's not what I cared about right now.
Jaxen mingled away from me—I didn't care about my sister because I knew what she would do in a pub like this. My eyes caught my cousin sitting in the corner, propping his head up and not moving an inch. I just heard that Cleopatra Cavern fell into a ravine and died. So I knew how Jeff was feeling right now.
Even when I took a seat in front of him, he refused to lift his head. I touched his shoulder, shaking him gently to wake him up.
"Jeff."
In the end, he was willing to raise his head to look at me. His face looked haggard and pale. Ignoring my arrival, he reached for his glass again, then downed the remaining absinthe in it until it was flushed.
"I'm sorry," I continued.
