The place that Naomi sent Kaia to was well taken care of. Although the exterior of the house looked old and dilapidated, the interior contrasted greatly with its modern and chic furnishing. There was a comfortable and cozy atmosphere. The landlord knew she was coming and already had the place warmed up for her.
Once Kaia settled in, she used her new phone to call Naomi's private number and filled her in on what had happened. She told her not to tell Alex about anything. All Naomi had to do was to monitor him for her. She also asked Naomi to work with the special team of people she had personally assembled to dig around for some dirt, as well as to release breaking news regarding her disappearance.
It only took a few days for major news and online media outlets to divulge information on how she had died from surgery complications. It was heartbreaking news for a day such as Christmas. Kaia could see her mother's tears on the TV in her new living room. She could tell that the tears were sincere.
At the moment, Kaia wasn't planning to make any moves. Instead, she wanted to keep digging around until she found something that could be used against the man and possibly even expose his wrongdoings to the world. She wanted to get back to Alex as soon as possible. She knew that once he woke up and saw her gone, he would be devastated. She didn't like it but her only option at the moment was to stay in hiding. There was just too much at stake.
Days turned into weeks as Kaia's illness became more severe. She had to create a fake identity and get the papers done with help from Naomi and their various contacts. After Kaia had everything settled, she went to the hospital to seek medical attention. She had her old medical files redone with her new name, Mia Hollings.
Kaia sat in the hospital room, waiting. Her hands began to tremble as she waited. What if they found out she had forged a fake identity? It took a while before the doctor came in to talk to her. "Alright, Ms. Hollings. It seems your condition has indeed gotten worse... but before we can go any further or decide what treatments we need to do, you will need to make a decision…" Kaia looked over at the doctor with furrowed brows as she slightly tilted her head to the side. "Decision about what?" she asked, slightly nervous. The doctor looked at her with a grim smile. "Well Ms. Hollings, it appears that you're pregnant. Your condition is only this bad right now because of the fetus in your stomach. So we can terminate and give you a transfusion until we find a suitable bone marrow donor."
Kaia froze. All the words that the doctor said were rushing through her mind in an incoherent way. She was pregnant…?! Thoughts of Alex flashed through her mind and she quickly looked at the doctor, shaking her head vigorously. "No. I won't terminate. Please try to do everything you can to save this baby...please…" she pleaded, firmly wiping a tear that strayed from her eyes. How could this happen? They used protection—at least for the first time. She blinked thinking back. She thought hard and remembered that they didn't use protection the second time. Kaia let out a small sigh as the doctor nodded and came up with a plan to help Kaia keep the fetus in her stomach. He set up scheduled blood transfusions, along with check-ups with a midwife that specialized in high-risk pregnancies.
Throughout the entire process, Kaia became even more adamant about giving birth to her child. She made preparations and met up with a lawyer to write out a will just in case things went south. She named Naomi the godmother of the child, so if anything happened to her when it came time to give birth, Naomi would get custody over her child. In her will, she also asked Naomi to arrange a meeting between Alex and their child if she died. Kaia wanted her child to meet their biological father at the very least.
Weeks flew by. Kaia was given a strict diet and exercise plan to follow. Since her condition continued to deteriorate as her stomach grew bigger, she spent most of her time in the hospital so that her condition and pregnancy could be monitored. Whenever there were nurses available to assist, she tried to go outside for strolls around the hospital's garden so she wouldn't be stuck in the hospital bed all day. When she hit 35 weeks, they decided to go ahead with a C-section. Kaia called Naomi out the day before the procedure. She told Naomi that it was a dire situation and she needed Naomi to be there for her.
