Chereads / Surviving In The Apocalypse As A Nameless Emperor / Chapter 7 - Alarming Realization

Chapter 7 - Alarming Realization

The first oddity he noticed was in the gymnasium, where people tend to be irritated with each other, to the extent that the fight almost broke every couple of minutes. That was another reason why he was complying with the senior, who rudely ordered him to fetch the gasoline. He would rather go outside than be in the same place where brawls are constantly transpiring.

The second one is when he gets confronted by Jade. He was naturally an imperturbable person, and it was challenging to make him angry just by mere words. However, for a strange reason, he becomes furious when condemned and eventually resorts to violence.

The more he reflected on it, the more he thought it was indeed a strange phenomenon. It's like everyone was bizarrely possessed by fiery demons, resulting in them being easily provoked.

Then, following his increased stats, Kyle's senses grew sharper as well. This improvement leads him to be able to locate a faint trace of abnormal redness that appears in people's eyes that are blinded in anger.

For example, the leader of the group just now. Kyle deliberately makes a joke of him to arouse his anger. And just as he anticipated, A flash of redness was clouding his eyes.

He involuntarily pointed out this discovery to Naegi, which turned kinda pointless since she seemed to be aware of this way earlier than him. Well, judging by her ability, it was not surprising she could detect it.

Then after a second thought, he regretted voicing his discovery. However, there was nothing he could do. The deed has already been done.

Promptly, Naegi squinted her eyes suspiciously at Kyle, "It's extremely dark, yet; you managed to get a clear view of it?"

Because the only available natural light source originated from the reflection of scarlet-dome walls, it's incredibly difficult to tell if someone's eyes were dyed in faint red unless that person was born nocturnal.

Previously, Jade's group was able to make out Naegi's graceful movement due to them pointing their flashlight at her. However, now they weren't switching on their flashlights, it should be impossible for a normal person to notice such an anomaly in Jade's group leader's eyes.

With no alibi to cover his lie, Kyle was temporarily made tongue-tied.

'Ah... I forgot that my present night vision could be considered as an abnormal ability.'' Kyle thought to himself and strained his brain, contemplating how to escape her query.

A couple of seconds later, Naegi withdrew her gaze and said lightly with a smile, "Well, it doesn't matter. Everyone has a secret. As long as it possesses no harm on me, I won't mind it."

She intentionally emphasizes the last sentence, indirectly threatening Kyle not to have any silly idea.

Kyle sighed with relief. He then nodded his head but didn't say anything.

The leader of the group was confused by their interactions. He was just about to ask something when a cry echoed from afar, "Tyler!"

The group leader, whose name turned out to be Tyler, replied, "What's wrong?"

The man quickly arrived beside Tyler and said in between his panting, "T-the students. No, the entire people are going crazy."

"What do you mean?" Tyler asked in a puzzling manner.

"I don't know the exact problem. But, presently, all the students, including the professor, were combating each other."

"What?! How's that possible?" Tyler was dumbfounded. It was just a few hours after the order to gather inside the gymnasium was issued, and a conflict had already broken out? Is the relationship between students that terrible?

"I don't know! Initially, a small quarrel was stirred between the freshmen and third-year students. However, in a short amount of time, the rest of the students joined in their fights. Even the professors couldn't avoid this mishap and ended up implicated. It was fortunate my position was near the entrance door. Otherwise, I won't succeed in my escape attempt." The man said in one breath, indicating how dire the situation was.

Kyle was at a loss for words hearing the man's explanation. Then he recalled his friend was still in the gymnasium. Driven in anxiousness, Kyle said in haste, "Miss Naegi, Senior Tyler, I'll be going first."

Without waiting for their response, Kyle rushed out of the track field. However, he halted his steps midway, turned around, and shouted, "I'll repay your favor later, Miss Naegi!"

Naegi was stunned to hear Kyle's proclamation. Before she could form a reply, she saw Kyle resume his sprint.

She obviously didn't buy Kyle's promise as her face remained indifferent. A couple of seconds later, a glint flashed through Naegi's eyes. Without dilly-dallying, she also dashed toward the gymnasium's direction.

...

After running for quite a while, Kyle finally made a stop at a particularly dark corner where no one was around.

Confirming he was indeed alone, Kyle began to take out the potion he had stored earlier.

Previously, because of fear of getting discovered by Jade, Kyle stashed the potion before he even got a chance to glimpse a clear look at it.

Now, however, when he inspected the liquid inside the jar, he felt strangely petrified. It looked like a murky illicit substance that came straight out of a witch's pot. While there's no fire below the jar, bubbles keep popping on the liquid for an unknown reason.

As Kyle unplugged the jar's cap, a pungent smell he couldn't describe immediately struck his nose.

Subconsciously, he blocked his mouth and restrained himself not to throw up that instant.

After composing himself, Kyle finally lifted his palm and held his breath. "Surely this potion won't kill me, right?"

His heart was in turmoil for a second before it was replaced by a massive determination.

With full reluctance, Kyle with his eyes closed, chugged the jar in one swoop. He gulped the entire jar's fill without any sign of taking a break. Kyle was certain that if he stopped drinking just for a second, he wouldn't be able to finish the potion due to its terrible taste and smell.

At that moment, he felt a burning and smooth sensation traveling down his throat. Obviously, the heat sensation here was different from drinking alcohol. The former was more lethal.

Following that, countless disturbing noises begin to fill his head. If Kyle could define, the noises were a combination of numerous people's murmur, something being scratched, police sirens, a droplet of water bouncing against the ground, etc.

This feeling made him desperately want to scrape his head in irritation. He feels like he is about to become crazy soon.

Fortunately, it didn't last long. However, before Kyle could even take a breather, another absurd sensation deluged him.

This time, he felt like being swallowed in eternal darkness, where no light exists. In that place, Kyle strangely didn't feel scared. Rather, he felt like returning to his mother's womb.

Under the constant nurture, Kyle's consciousness became blurry, and before he knew it, he gradually succumbed to the darkness.
