Chapter 1 - Prologue: Jason

Jason woke up to the sound of a fire alarm, its blaring sound jarring to his ears, in comparison to the peaceful sleep he had just held for the last few hours; it was a living hell. He sat up and cracked his back stretching his arms out to his side while yawning, "Ugh, again? Really?" he said with a tone of arrogance tainting his voice.

Despite for some this being a massive shock to wake up to however for Jason this was nothing out of the ordinary, he stepped out of his room proceeding down the stairs, the rotten old carpet encroached onto his feet and still giving him shivers up his spine even after living in this environment for years since his mother disappeared.

His father had always been a drinker but his mother had always kept him in line, with her gone his addictive behaviour had gone off the rails to an extreme level. Jason walked into the kitchen where his father laid passed out sprawled across the kitchen floor with a mixture of drool and vomit dripping from his mouth, within his hand he held a container filled with different nondescript pills, upon the grill were four rashers of what Jason could only assume were supposed to be bacon however, their coal like appearance and smoke pluming from them made them look more reminiscent of the surface of a volcano.

"At least he wasn't cooking with oil this time, that was bad" he said beneath his breath while looking at the scorch marks on the ceiling just under where his bed would be. "Come on Steven, let's get you somewhere soft" Jason says as he drags his father across the floor toward the living room while turning the oven off and putting the tray in the water in the sink. "I'll deal with all that in the morning, I need some damn sleep" he says as he dumps his dad on the couch.

While Jason moves to go up the stairs, he starts to hear his alarm starting to ring from up stairs, "For fucks sake, why do I never get any fucking sleep", he says as he rushes to turn of his alarm. He then started running through his draws to find some clothes for the day and realizes that he hasn't got any washed.

Jason picked a set of clothes and put them up to his nose, "Eh, I guess this will work for the day" he wrinkled his nose as he slipped the t-shirt on and pushed a cigarette up into his mouth from the packet and the pack into his coats chest pocket and he was ready to set out.

"I hope to God this changes sometime soon, I hate how my life is and some days I wish it would just end"

Walking past the school he used to attend the dark stormy clouds rolled thunderously above him as heavy, oppressive rain began to fall onto him, soaking him and destroying the freshly lit cigarette, the empty streets howled with the wind populated only by rolling litter and the occasional rat scavenging around for a bit of food left by the careless inhabitants of the area.

This area had been abandoned by everyone with money quite some time ago, the city itself was seen as scum by everyone outside and the people seen as worse, in truth this was a place that people who had no option would go to and those unfortunate enough to be born there rarely ever made it out. This was a place of lost hope and not much else could be said about it.

Jason finally made it to his job, it was nothing much but it was at least enough to occasionally put food on the table, its long hours were gruelling and never gained any respect from the managers but Jason was fine with that, there wasn't much else he could really do.

As he tried to open the door however he found it to be locked, he looked up through his drenched hair and saw that the entire place had been stripped clean overnight and with a white marker on the glass of the door, the word "Closed" was scrawled.

Jason slumped down with the back of his head against the door, he knew in himself that he truly had nothing.

He began walking towards the nearby motorway bridge. All his hope in life was gone; he had no friends, no money, no job, no lover and soon no life. "If one person smiles at me before I get to the bridge, I won't jump" and despite seeing multiple people on the way, not a single sign of joy or care radiated from any of them.

He stepped up onto the cold metal railing looking down onto the motorway below that was filled with bustling cars. His palms were drenched not just from rain but with sweat, his legs felt like lead and his breathing was rapid and uncontrolled. He took a deep breath as he felt the hairs on his skin stand on end.

He stepped forward off the bridge but as he did a bolt of lightning arced into him and struck him and he instantly blacked out.
