Chapter 8 - Things That Go Bump In The Night

Wait, as soon as I touched her it went silent, if we're gonna get away I'm going to have to let her go and hope she can follow me.

Phoenix POV

"Wait Kai, let go. We're running for no reason"

"What the hell are you talking about. No reason. No reason. I can hear them right now" Kai was still running frantically in front of me. I had no choice I sped up grabbing his arm.

"Listen Kai, take a breath and calm down. You're panicking no reason. Because, if the Night Creatures knew where we were they would have caught us by now" I went on my tip toes and placed my hands on his cheeks looking him in his eyes. "Take a deep breath, it's going to be alright. I won't let anything hurt you, okay," He looked at me and took a deep breath. "Now, I say we keep heading towards, the bird nest,"

"Okay, but it's still hours away, I don't know..."

"Look a horse, maybe we can ride it", there was a pure black horse, it looked terrifying.

"Please, please for the sake of my blood pressure, stop trying to touch dangerous animals", the horse knelt its head down to me, it bent it knees down to the floor. Inviting me to ride it. "I don't believe it"

"Come on Knobby, let's get on", (Knobby means Knobhead) we climbed onto the horse, "Hold on"

We finally arrived at the bird's nest at sunrise, the nest was bigger than I anticipated, I thought it would be... Well the size of a bird's nest. This is huge like the size of mountain. How the hell are we supposed to get up there. I know for sure, I can get up there, but Knobby over there is looking tired. Maybe I should let him sleep, then go when he's sleeping. "Well how about we set up camp and you can sleep, it's better to sleep during the day anyways, it's a lot safer too"

"Yeah we should probably get some sleep," he paused then looked at me "We didn't bring any sleeping bags"

"Its okay you can sleep on my clothes", his cheeks turned bright red for some reason, he looked at me.

"Ummmmm (cough), you'll get cold, plus when are you gonna sleep"

"I don't get cold. And furthermore, I thought you were smart. Why would we both go to sleep in the wild,"

"I can read minds. We couldn't be safer"

"So, you can read the minds of animals"

"Well, it's not coherent. But fine we will sleep in shifts" he stopped his sentence as soon as I removed my jacket and folded it for him to use, he looked down "Um, thanks. I'm sorry"

"Why are you sorry"

"For the things I said earlier, it, it wasn't okay" he laid down and began closing his eyes. I'm sure as soon as he starts training at school, he'll be very powerful. I rustled my hand through his hair that had become messy. I looked up at the overwhelming mountain of twigs. I started to climb , the wind in my hair was terrifying, still I continued, for the sake of my family I have to find the bird.

What felt like hours, I finally reached to the top, my hand were covered in blood, with splinters pocking out, however, I made it. Inside the nest was a small egg, it was red with black spots, the size chicken egg. There was nothing here, no mother bird no father bird, it was no where in sight. "You, poor thing", I knew that phoenix birds were a dying race, they were hunted for sport, human weapons hunt them, their bodies are given to nobility as a source of gratitude. This egg wont survive without fire. This explains why the egg is so small. "Don't worry I'm going to get you out of here, I promise". I picked up the egg ever so gentle, I focused my body heat bringing it to a extremely high temperature until there was steam coming out of my hands. I could do basic spiritual powers, but I had to be careful, sometimes I tend to lose control especially when emotional. There was a human laugh in the distance of the bird nest.

"Looky looky, what do we have here" said the man, he was tall probably around my dads height meaning only one thing he was a human weapon. This is bad, behind him came four other men around the same height. The one who just spoke had a sword in his hands, whilst the other one had a bow, one had two guns, and the other had an axe.

"She's extremely cute", the one with the gun said

"Yes, very. I bet we could sell for a very high price", the one with the axe said. this is bad very bad, I felt this wave of fear come over me, my hair began to set on fire. I've gotta get myself under control.

"Woooow, her hairs on fire. That could only mean one thing" the one with the sword said pausing "she's got spiritual power and by the looks of it very high spiritual energy"

"If we sell her to the right person we won't have to work a day in our lives", the one with the gun said. The one with the axe was silent, he just stared at me.

"She's holding the Phoenix egg. How adorable, we could sell them both. I can hear the gold now", the one with the bow said. I began looking around, I knew I couldn't beat them in a fight, my only option is to escape, however climbing down would be impossible. I ran to the edge of the nest looking down the ground looked so far away. Rather I let myself get captured by these guys, or I jump, and hope that the fall doesn't kill me.

"Listen little girl", the man with the axe finally spoke putting emphasis on the little. "You won't survive that fall", he paused "If you come with us, you'll probably be sold to nobility, you'll live a great life. Look we'll look after you. Matter of fact we won't sell you right away. You're small, and you can climb and you're fast. If you help us out we will help you out", the words echo in my ears, like my past the word help disguised as being a tool.

"I'd rather die" I leaped of the nest I closed my eyes. I'm ready
