Deridiv Listes returned to his bed while the eel was about to rise. His wife was still there. Soundly sleeping as he tiptoed his way to bed. Trying not to make any sound, Deridiv climbed the bed and lay beside her.
The mission today had failed. Deridiv and his elite squads couldn't find the secret dwellings of the rebel army. He could tell his army to strike but the movement would alarm his wife.
He had just made a promise to her. He must not break it. Three months. That was all. The rebel army couldn't do much in that time frame.
Deridiv turned to look at her sleeping. She was beautiful in every way imaginable. He caressed her smooth cheeks, carefully so as not to sting her skin with his rough hand.
How lucky I am to have you, Deridiv thought. I will protect you with everything I have, Stedrin. I promise you that.
Light softly went through the window. The eel started to wake up. Giving light to everything it covered.
