Chapter 2 - Hida Takayama High School: An Entrance ceremony to remember

In front of Yamazaki Kaito was a crowd of faces all lined up in an orderly fashion, linking their gaze with his. The young master remained unfazed by the extra attention directed at him, the moment he was introduced to the school.

'I regret my decision already, I guess being the centre of attention can drain a guy.' he lamented to himself, inwardly showing little to no interest in the entrance ceremony.

The principal, a stout looking man who had single strands of hair sticking out of his chin, stepped aside for Kaito to give his welcome words.

Kaito had been told he should say something informal and relatable, to lessen the tension between him and his new classmates.

Kaito nodded in response and stepped up to the podium, showing zero level of nervousness at all.

"Yamazaki Kaito. Age: 16, Weight: I weigh approximately 60 kilograms as at this morning. Height: I am 173.5 centimeters tall, blood type; Type O. Zodiac sign: Leo." He announced to the hall of students, as though he were reading his personal info from a notebook.

His approach took the students by storm and instead of lessening the tension, Kaito unknowingly heightened it.

"We're going to school with that?."

"He didn't bat an eye while speaking!."

"I think it's cute."

The students had already started making their deductions and forming their personal opinions about Yamazaki Kaito, Japan's favored prodigy.

Kaito seeing as he had maybe come off too strong on his classmates, broke a nervous sweat, unsure of how to move past his introduction.

"I hope you will allow me render my services to all of you in a bid to achieve a successful school year." He swiftly said with no effort taking a polite bow to the school, masking just how nervous he had gotten.

The hall fell into a deafening silence, as he remained in his position, determined not to move until he got a reaction from his peers. The school staff along with the principal had intentions of stepping in, but the students reactions took them by storm.

"So cuuuute!." A large majority of the female students suddenly squealed with no restraint. They're timed response almost caused Kaito to trip and lose his balance, luckily for him the principal made it to him just in time.

"That was very enlightening Yamazaki, the students definitely have your support." He announced, wearing a forced smile on his lips. For even a fool could read the room and nit-pick the situation.

'This boy won't survive the first day here.' the frigid principal deduced, the ominous stares and glares directed at Kaito was proof enough. He had gone and made enemies with every male within a fifteen metre range.

Kaito on the other hand felt a warm sensation prick at his heart the very moment he heard the students respond to him so passionately.

'Cute?.'

Class 2-B.

That was the hot spot for every student ever since the entrance ceremony. It wasn't even first period yet, but a majority of the other classes had stacked against each other, their heads peaking out of the sliding doors.

It was the class Yamazaki Kaito was placed in, and subsequently, the most popular room in the entire school.

Kaito did not seem to mind all the attention he drew to himself, as long as it did not hinder with his business, he would allow it.

A hand slapped his desk all of a sudden, drawing his attention to whomever it was that dared to disrupt his thinking.

"Yamazaki Kaito right?." A short orange haired girl wearing cat ears piped up, stretching her hand out to shake his. Her lips were definitely a prey to a variety of lip balms and glosses. Her nails were painted bright pink, matching her earrings.

"Weren't you at the entrance ceremony?." He retorted, displeased at how she feigned ignorance to his existence. Her eyes twitched while she spoke, which he took as a sign she was lying.

"Well I wasn't really paying attention, but anyways..." She took his hand in hers for a vigorous handshake. "Am Suzuki Suki You can call me Suki-chan all you want Kaito-Kun." She told him in haste, tightening her sweaty grip on his soft palms.

'So soft!.' she inwardly exclaimed in glee, shamelessly taking a feel of his hand.

Kaito did well to retract his grip from hers and rubbed it against his pants, irritated by another's sweat.

"Yamazaki-Kun is sufficient, and I'll refer to you as my classmate or Suzuki-San." Kaito sharply informed her, not giving enough thought on how his image would look.

Suki definitely did not expect the cute boy from the entrance ceremony to be such a brat, she immediately felt very shallow for attempting to make friends with him.

"Ah...I see, what about joining my friends and I for lunch?. We know a good spot..."

"Pardon me, but am retaking the fitness exams during lunch, so I must decline." Kaito lied, with the intention of driving this loud mouth away from him.

Her smile had started to twitch, it would be seconds till her charade would go up in flames. Kaito was good at discerning between genuine and fake people.

"I see, well if you need help choosing a club then just call for me." Suki said in defeat, retreating back to her seat feeling as though she had made a total fool out of herself.

Kaito heaved a sigh of relief, glad that he would be left to himself. He dipped his hand into his bag and pulled out his flip phone, to check if he had gotten any call from anyone important.

"You still use that?." The voice of the speaker sounded irritated and amused at the same time. Kaito could tell that the person asking was a simple minded individual.

He raised his eyes at the person in front of him, holding two cans of chocolate milk in both hands. Kaito measured his height with his eyes, and could tell...

'I am at two centimeters taller than him.' he deduced wearing a triumphant smile on his stoic face.

This person was definitely into sports, Kaito could tell from his legs and arms that he might be part of a track team or a swimming club.

"I didn't mean to sound offensive, but that flip phone can't do much." The boy went on to say, pulling a chair and taking a seat opposite Kaito.

Kaito made a motion to object, but the simpleton, as he referred to him, had already placed both drinks on the table along with his worn out backpack.

"Where did you get it?." He asked with genuine interest, opening his palms as a form of permission to examine it.

Kaito noticing the animation spread across his face shrugged his shoulders and handed over the phone to him.

"It was my father's, he gave it to me two years ago." Kaito informed him, resting his chin on his palm. He just remembered how it was only two years ago that he officially owned a phone.

It sounded strange that a super genius such as himself did not have a phone of his own. But the decision was made by Kaito himself, he was of the idea that having a phone was a distraction hence, he abstained from it.

"So is this like a family heirloom?." The simpleton asked with fascinated eyes, typing into it.

"No. It's just a regular phone." Kaito sharply replied, irked at how easy to fool this simpleton was, but surprisingly not irritated by it.

He took his phone back and stared into the screen, his uninterested eyes widened in shock for a split second.

The simpleton had inputted his number into Kaito's flip-phone and saved it with his name.

Itsuki-Kun it read in capital letters, he pulled out his Android phone and placed it in Kaito's hand.

"Gimme yours too so I can text you too and add you to the class group chat." Itsuki told him with a bright smile on his face.

Kaito could only nod in response, doing as he was told by the meathead. After he was done he saved it as Yamazaki Kaito, then nervously pressed it back to Itsuki.

"Great, we're friends now so you can call me Itsuki-Kun." The boy said, pushing the chair back and standing up, taking only one of the chocolate milk on the desk.

Kaito furrowed his brows, unsure of when and where he consented to being friends with this simpleton. The meathead had gone and totally misread the situation.

"See you at lunch." He swiftly chimed, patting hard on Kaito's back in a friendly manner. Kaito wanted to talk back and reject his invitation, but his attention was immediately grabbed by the sudden entrance of the last edition of the class.

It was as though time had stopped yet again but this time slowly moving, and the only two people around were them both.

Kaito was still stunned by her sudden appearance, that he failed to realise she had pulled out the empty seat beside him and sat on it!.

The priceless painting he had assumed he would seldom see, had turned out to be the one sitting next to him???.
