Silence… that was what reigned between them in the empty cell, Pete was sighing internally, thinking of just what to say in this situation, but no words could come out, he could not think of anything sensible, and well Natasha was waiting to get scolded by Pete big time, so much so that she actually wished that it could have been another Police officer who didn't know her to arrest her, at least that would be better.
But Pete over here, he knew her way too well, and she knew that she would have to explain everything that happened with him involved now.
"So… I guess that I don't have to joke about you arresting me anymore… ha…ha" said Natasha as she laughed dryly, and she looked at Pete who was not laughing right now.
"Oh for the love of all things good and pure Natasha, what in the world are you saying??? Don't you realize how serious this is?" asked Pete as he sighed and he looked at Natasha, if this was her attempt to try to lighten the mood, it did not work at all, the humour was as dry as a biscuit, there was no humour here at all in the first place.
"*Sigh*, I know Pete, I know, please don't be angry wait I…" said Natasha as she sighed and she was cut off.
"Don't be angry? Don't be angry Natasha??" asked Pete.
"Oh give me a break, of all the things that could happen, this is by far the worst, and what's even worse is that I don't know anything" said Pete.
"Firstly, what the heck did you go and do in Russia? You didn't even tell me that you were travelling, secondly, why would you return today of all days while I am on duty, it's new years for crying out loud, you are supposed to be at home sleeping, and not spending your first time in a cell, thirdly, just what did you get yourself into" said Pete as he sighed.
"Are you going to scold me anymore Pete?" asked Natasha as Pete just frowned at her.
"Natasha you always do this, always, you always get yourself into trouble, you are like a trouble magnet, wherever you go, because you just can't keep yourself away from danger" said Pete.
"Hey, mention one other time besides this where I supposedly got myself into trouble?" asked Natasha as Pete sighed.
"You really want to do this Natasha?" asked Pete.
"Yes, mention another time" said Natasha.
"Alright, okay, fine, you want me to do this, then fine" said Pete as he nodded his head.
"Alright, what about back in high school, when you disobeyed me, you went along to try to find out information on…" said Pete as he was cut off.
"No Pete, don't go there, that was only once…" said Natasha as she cut Pete off.
"Only once eh? Natasha you seriously spent the whole night in the Station, your dad was worried sick about you, and it was all on me for getting a minor involved" said Pete.
"Oh come on Pete, I wanted to help you out of my own accord, besides, we ended up catching him didn't we?" asked Natasha as Pete sighed.
"Nat, in Police business, there is no we, only me, my job, and my duty to my country, and getting a civilian involved can cost me my job" Pete.
"Pete, I'm sorry, but you know I never want you to get hurt" said Natasha as Pete sighed.
"I know Nat, I know, now back to what is on ground" said Pete.
"The allegations you have been charged with are very serious, trafficking drugs, is a serious offence" said Pete.
"You don't think that I actually know anything about that do you?" asked Natasha carefully.
"No, of course not, I know you, and if there is something that I can vouch for, it is you, but I can't right now, not without enough evidence" said Pete as Natasha sighed in relief, she knew that he would believe her.
"I don't know anything about those drugs found in the suitcase" said Natasha.
"I know that, this Is probably the case of a drug mule, sometimes, someone who does not know that they are carrying drugs, drug lords use them all the time, so when they are caught, it won't be traced back to them, and the sometimes innocent and naïve drug mule would end up rotting in prison, but I won't let you go to prison Nat" said Pete as Natasha nodded his head, she knew that he wouldn't.
"So tell me Natasha, what happened?" asked Pete.
"I don't know Pete, I seriously don't know, I didn't know that those drugs were in there, I went through Russian security and checking, and nothing was detected at all" said Natasha in confusion.
"Yes Nat, but think, think, who would plant drugs in your suitcase, what did you do, who did you offend?" asked Pete as Natasha could say nothing at all.
"Wait a minute Pete, but how did you get information that there would be someone carrying drugs?" asked Natasha.
"We were sent an anonymous tip, which told us about your flight number, the flight ticket you had, and as well as a description of the suitcase that we should expect to find the drugs in" said Pete.
"That jerk" said Natasha internally as she scoffed, Romanoff did this, he seriously set her up big time.
"As we speak I asked Morales to find out who exactly tipped up, let's hope that he finds out something, so that way we can be able to prove that this is foul play" said Pete.
"I hope so too" said Natasha as she sighed.
"You said something about the suitcase being a gift" said Pete.
"Yes it was, from a very unfortunate human being" said Natasha as she scoffed.
"Can you prove that it is? Because if we can find a receipt or something, so we can prove that you were given the bag with the drugs already implanted in it" said Pete.
"No, I have nothing of that sort" said Natasha.
"Well can you tell me who gave you the suitcase as a gift?" asked Pete.
"No Pete… I can't" said Natasha as she sighed, she made a decision.
"Why not?" asked Pete.
"Because it would be no use, the person is someone irrelevant" said Natasha as she remembered what Romanoff said about loyalty, maybe he was hinting to this, maybe it was a test of her loyalty or something.
"Nat is there something that you are not telling me?" asked Pete as he eyed Natasha suspiciously, he knew her well enough to know when she was hiding something.
"No Pete…. Nothing, just don't insist" said Natasha.
"Wait Nat, did someone threaten you not to say the truth, or what?" asked Pete.
"Pete, it's nothing" said Natasha.
"No but it is something Nat, you need to tell me everything, every single thing, that's the only way that I will be able to help you, because you are in a deep mess right now" said Pete.
"Pete, I am done with this, the person in question is someone irrelevant, he is of no use to you, besides, he's back in Russia" said Natasha.
"Then I will go find him" said Pete.
"Oh don't be silly Pete, you can't" said Natasha.
"Name Natasha, give me his name, and that's it" said Pete.
"I can't" said Natasha.
"Why not?" asked Pete as he could not get it.
"I can't tell you why I can't Pete, try to understand" said Natasha as Pete was loosing more and more understanding of the situation with the way Natasha was acting.
"Natasha, you are hiding something, do you want to rot in jail or what?" asked Pete.
"If no evidence comes in your favour, you will be sent to the women's prison in three days' time, so you need to tell me everything now!" said Pete.
"I said that I can't!" said Natasha as she replied to him with the same vigour.
"Alright fine Natasha… fine" said Pete as he could not get this at all.
"Look Pete, don't go there, it's not important to know who gave me the suitcase, what is important is finding a way for me to get out of here" said Natasha.
"You know what I hate most Natasha… it's the fact that even if I try to turn a blind eye, I can't leave you alone in this mess, I won't be able to rest until I get you out of here" said Pete.
"I know Pete, and I love you for that, but just trust me when I say that who gave me the suitcase does not matter" said Natasha as she walked closer to Pete and he sighed.
"Alright fine Nat, fine, what about your lawyer?" asked Pete.
"I don't have one Pete… the only lawyer that I know is the family lawyer, and I don't want you know who to know about this, I want to keep this out of the family name, because Grandfather, will blow things out of proportion" said Natasha.
"Fine, I understand, I will ask my lawyer to oversee your case, he's the best of the best" said Pete.
"Thank you Pete" said Natasha as she smiled.
"Are you sure that you don't want your husband to know about this?" asked Pete as he said the word husband in disgust.
"No Pete, no, I don't want that man to know at all, he's horrible, I don't want him to know, and I don't want my baby to be worried" said Natasha.
"I doubt that you can hide this for long though Natasha, the justice system is a bit slow, whether you like it or not, you might spend days here" said Pete.
"I will be fine Pete, they don't know that I'm back yet, I wanted to surprise Joy… I guess that I can stay hidden for a few more days" said Natasha.
"Alright Nat, fine, I have to go now, I will bring you something to eat" said Pete.
"Thanks Pete, you are the best" said Natasha as she smiled.
"Mhmm, just promise me that you won't give me another reason to arrest you again Nat, and seriously, I am serious" said Pete as he smiled and Natasha laughed as he walked out of the cell and he closed the cell door and he locked it with the key.
"I will be fine Pete go" said Natasha as she smiled at him as Pete stayed there staring at her.
"Alright Nat" said Pete as he walked away and he sighed, he knew that it was going to be hard to get Natasha out of this one.
