Chapter 4 - BEHIND ENEMY LINES

Waking up underneath a pile of ruble isn't the best way to wake up. Unfortunately for me, I did; coupled with people screaming and begging for help waking me up like an alarm clock.

I get up with an aching head, and body. Blood dripped from every corner of my body. I looked around my surroundings to find a flaming inferno.

I quickly got up as my already aching head, pounded even harder. I held my head but kept moving forward. Suddenly, a multitude of gunshots were fired, I ducked behind cover as I observed what was happening, and as suddenly as the shots were fired, the shots stopped just as quick. I walked cautiously towards the source of the shots.

I got closer and closer when a guard suddenly appeared out of no where. He tried to scream but I quickly act on my instincts and cover his mouth while strangling the life out of him. Soon, he laid lifeless, on the burning floor, never to rise again.

I slowly creep towards the source of the sound, and soon saw a figure lie on the ground. The creeping turned to walking, turned to jogging, then to sprinting. Thankfully I got to the figure without any resistance. I turned the person to face me, and a man with a bullet wound straight in the middle of the forehead. I was relieved to see that the man was not one of us. When I was finished inspecting the body I quickly stood up and turned around, then BAM, something hit my back, I turn around once more, and I saw one enemy infantry man with a club. He looked like he hesitated so I took the opportunity to pounce at him.

I knocked him down and relentlessly threw punch after punch. His face was a bloody mess, I was then pulled off of him and I was punched in the stomach. I sat on my knees, with my arms wrapped around my stomach, I looked up and I saw three more infantry men. One quickly picked up a club and smacked my head with no hesitation, as I was knocked out cold...

I woke up from time to time, and I was in a different place every time. The first time I woke up, I was getting picked up, the second was me getting shipped somewhere. and the last time was me getting locked up. Finally, I woke up, for good this time. My head was spinning in pain,I reached over to my head to caress it, but that was when I realised my hands and feet were shackled to the ground.

I shook the shackles to try to loosen them, but it was no use. They were made with pure steel, or so it seemed, but I wasn't gonna stick around and find out. I sat still, catching my breath, thinking what to do next. My eyes soon darted from corner to corner, when something shimmered in the light of the fire. I quickly reached for it, and it turned out to be a needle, and it so happened that I knew how to pick a lock with a needle, however I needed two. So I continued searching.

"If there's one then there must be another one!" I thought hopefully to myself.

And to my pleasant surprise, I found one more! I snatch it off the ground and hold it up in the air with a smile on my face, like a child receiving the toy he's always been wanting for Christmas. My mini celebration was cut short, as I heard heavy footsteps walking ever so closely to my cell. I quickly try to pick the lock of my shackles. My hands and fingers began shaking as the footsteps grew heavier and heavier. Until I was able to get one of the shackles on my hand off, and the other! I begin picking the shackles on my feet, but it was useless. The sound of the loud metal shackles fall on the hard rock floor alerted the guards and they swiftly run to my cell.

And there I was, kneeling on one knee, trying to pick the lock. I froze for a second, but I quickly get up and fight. I lifted my heavy arms, as the guards raised their spears. It remained a stalemate, as each person waited for the other to attack first. I went into deep focus discerning who would strike first. My thought process was soon disturbed as one of the guards grew impatient, and charged at me, screaming like a mad-man. I quickly disarm him, and his other buddy came to tag along, I quickly took care of both of them. I scavenge their clothes for the keys, my hands moving like lightning. Then, something hit the back of my head, I was thrown to my knees and hands, I reach for the back of my head and I look at my hand, it was all bloody, soaked in a deep red; then, I blacked out.

Once I awoke, I was greeted to yet another screaming head ache, and the very shackles I risked my life to pick, it was all the same. Other than the fact that my room seemed smaller, smoother, like I was inside a steel cube, with one singular metal door.

The cell was the embodiment of hopelessness. I sank onto the floor, head between my shackled legs. I wept, but no tears came out, I wondered what happened with the others. Were the killed? Imprisoned? Tortured? Or did one of them fold, before the very presence of pain. It's alright though, It's not like they know anything.

While deep in thought, I the door started to rattle, and it soon opened, and about 3 or 4 men came into the room. I looked up slowly, as if i've given up all hope for life. I was picked up off of the cold metal floor, held up by my arms. I looked up from the floor, and another individual came into the room, but he didn't look like the guards, instead he looked more like a noble.

"Perhaps the warden?" I thought to myself.

Soon enough, the "warden" started to talk to the guards in a strange language, it almost sounded like an alien language. With mostly vowels, the words were spoken. After the warden finished talking one of the guards left and came back with a syringe.

My eyes popped and I sweated beads. It glowed a light blue, I had no clue what was in it, but I wasn't sticking around to find out. Like a toddler having a temper tantrum, I fought back, but it was no use, their grip on me was too powerful. I was forced to stop in place when one of them punched me into submission. I couldn't breathe, and while I was trying to catch my breath, I was injected by the blue fluid. I was suddenly dropped on the floor, and the guards left, leaving only the warden in with me. After a few seconds, the drug started to take affect. My vision was spinning, and blurry; I started hallucinating.

"Is this weed? Liquified weed?" I asked myself.

After a minute had passed, the affects wore off, and I started to think straight. Soon after, the warden, who had been sitting on a chair the whole time, spoke in his own language. Except, I could understand it!

"Why art thou in our domain?" The warden demanded, while sipping a cup of tea.

"H-How am I able to-"

"It's a serum that we fabricated; it enables the user to have impeccable understanding of all languages of this world, and others." He explained nonchalantly.

"It will ware off in a couple of hours." He continued.

I sat there dumbfounded, trying to process the information.

"You seem to not have received my previous inquiry, why art thou in our domain?" He repeated

"WHY ARE YOU TALKING FANCY!" I bursted.

"I know not of what you are speaking about." He continued with a fancy accent that really pissed me off.

"THAT! YOU KEEP TALKING- oh" I screamed as I realised that it's the normal way people talk back then.

"Precisely." He continued. "Now answer the question." He said while leaning back.

I was forced to answer the question.

"What- What do you mean?? YOU'RE in MY world."

"Yes, I very much comprehend what thy is saying, but this area of 'your' world is ours, your kind has been ostracised here." He remarked.

"We've destroyed, enslaved, and pillaged everything in this territory, and we will exterminate your kind, from this very soil." He exclaimed.

"YOU PIECE OF GARBAGE!" I furiously insulted him, but before I was able to get up to beat him, the door flew open, and the warden was taken from his seat and killed.

I froze, and looked up, and saw the face I least expected to see. It was Steve! My face lit up with relief, as I was helped up.

"Let's get out of here before the guards notice we're gone." Steve said while picking me up onto my feet.

We both scrambled out of the tiny room to regroup with Artur, who had blood on his hands from his act of murder.

"Were you guys also drugged?" I asked while we started running.

"Yeah." They replied in between breaths.

Nothing was said after that.

We fought through hordes of guards, making sure to out run as many as we can. We fought side by side, through thick and thin, helped each other, and we soon got out, in one piece, miraculously!

A huge smile was plastered onto our faces as we sat, or lied down trying to catch our breaths while shutting the door behind us shut. We laughed to ourselves, while shutting our eyes to rest, after all, it was one heck of a day.

I looked up as I had finally caught my breath, and soon, the smile on my face slowly turned upside down....

We were on some type of cliff, overlooking the city we once protected. The city was dark and filled with smoke, the trees lay barren, and the buildings being burned down to a pile of dust. It was something you expected to see in a post apocalyptic movie, except this was real life.

I called Steve and Artur to also take a look, and soon their faces turned blue from the sheer shock they were experiencing. a few moments pass by, and one of them pointed something out that drove me to utter rage.

The people of the once thriving city, were being imprisoned, tortured, or executed. The warden was right, and now his kind was going to pay dearly.

"We're gonna drive them out of here, every last one of them." I declared with burning eyes.

"We're going behind enemy lines."
