"Did he just jump up there?" She asked with her mouth hanging open, pointing to the hole in the church ceiling.
"He did," Mariano replied. "But that's not our problem right now. We need to get out of here," he urged her to walk to the altar when he heard banging on the church door. With its old wooden door, it would not take a long time for the crowd outside to get into the church.
He would have a hard time defending Iris because he was outnumbered. He could easily run away or fight his way out but with Iris next to him, it would be a huge problem, especially if Iris got wounded and those bitten outside would smell her blood.
"And we are going to do the same?"
"The same what?" She asked, her eyes rounding like ping pong balls. She had a vague idea of what Mariano was saying but her brain was rejecting it despite seeing the man in black leather do what he said.
