Chapter 16 - Unemployment

A soul eater is the hybrid she met in the library. They could suck the soul of any unnatural and assume the form of the souls they sucked. They were evil.

A soul eater pried upon innocent souls and sucked the soul out of them. They could never be good.

A soulless on the other hand was a being who did not bear any soul. If they touched any unnatural, their abilities and strength will cancel out making them normal and vulnerable like humans.

But they will return to normal once the soulless stops touching them. Soulless were not naturally evil, they were normal. Too normal. Like human.

But their biggest power is that they could kill any creatures easily if they were touching. So, the unnatural community feared both. Though soul eaters were much worse.

She hoped the child would be soulless for its own good. These were all the thoughts she could spare for her unborn child. At least she was letting it live.

She reckoned the child will be born soon. Though how soon, she could not tell. The child was growing rapidly and her belly was already protruding out.

When she was done sewing the hem of the clothing, she put away all her instruments and dusted her clothing and put all her instruments in her bag.

Ahe decided to head to the only tailoring shop in the village. She worked for A Mrs Benet with her handicapped husband. Mind you he made fine corsets.

Anais felt bad for the dress. It will suit someone like Irvine better. It was purple a purple slammerkin

And when she saw the old woman who came to collect the dress, she felt bad about the good dress.

The woman was a wrinkly pile with a twisted smile.

When she looked at Anais, she wrinkled her nose as if the sight of her tasted bitter.

Mrs Benet pulled her aside and whispered in her ear

"Can you help her get into the dress? The maid who handled this task has fallen prey to pneumonia. So, they couldn't attend work"

"Sure" Anais nodded her head. She agreed to keep her employer happy not from the goodness of her heart.

Mrs Merkel stood like a doll with her arms in the air. Anais realised that once she stood like that too. How useless everything was. The more servants one depended on, the weaker they grew.

But she went over to help Mrs Markel with perfect manners. She will behave herself for the rest of the fitting for her employer.

All went well until, in the struggle of hoisting the narrow bodice over her head, Mrs Merkel's shift fell open and her left breast flopped over the edge of her stays. It looked nothing more than a deflated balloon, livid and elongated. A laugh bubbled and started to climb up her throat but she tried to stop it.

And when she looked up and met Mrs Merkel's gaze, she could do nothing to hold it back. A terrible laugh bubbled out of her and it shocked her employer as well as the customer.

Anais realized she did something that was bad for the business yet she could not bring herself to regret it.

As she waited in the back room she listened in on them. She hoped the lady won't cancel. The dress was complete and the money was already paid. Besides this could lead to her unemployment. And that's what happened.

She lost her job. As she walked back under the heavy sun, she knew she had to hunt down another job. She stopped and massaged her shoulder due to my fatigue.

Due to being pregnant, she couldn't materialise anywhere and that was why she had to take a long way home. And that was walking.

As she reached home, she put down her hand bag and collapsed on the floor due to exhaustion. Even vampires experienced fatigue. She knew she would be back at her peak soon.

She did not know how long she laid there but soon a hand was offered to her mouth. Before she knew her fangs elongated and instinctively she sunk her teeth into the flesh and pulled. Immediately blood started pouring into her mouth and she greedily swallowed taking every drop.

When she was satisfied she let go of the hand and slumped against the wall. All her fatigue immediately disappeared after feeding.

Then she felt herself getting picked up. Her eyes flew open panic rising in her throat but she was greeted with the familiar set of gray eyes.

"It's okay, go back to sleep" Gray eyes muttered.

"When did you come back?" she asked

"Just a while ago" Aron replied. Then she was placed on the bed. A slender hand touched her forehead.

"You must have been tired" he frowned but quickly smothered it into a smile and asked

"How is the baby ?" Then he carefully touched her belly as if he didn't want to hurt the little creature growing inside her.

Anais did not reply. The man was weird. No matter how much she pushed him away, he came back hungry for more.

"The child is growing so rapidly" He tried again. But Anais didn't reply. She just closed her eyes and turned away from him.

"I had a bad day at work. I could use some sleep"

After a while, she could hear him sign and the sound of retreating feet are the last thing she heard before drifting off.
