"Logan Shade, please report to the headmasters office at once." An announcement rang out across the PA system.
Getting up from his seat, a 16 year old boy exited the room and began making his way towards the headmasters office. The other children around him all began chatting, questioning why Logan was called to the headmasters office.
"Be quiet, you are in the middle of class. Get back to work or you will all be cleaning the cafeteria for a week." Restoring peace in the classroom, the teacher once again began teaching.
Walking down the hall and approaching the large staircase in front of him, Logan was wondering why it was he was called into the headmasters office. He hadn't broken any of the rules that he was aware of, his grades were average so he wouldn't be called for the upcoming academic competition. Nothing that he thought of made sense for him to be called into the office.
He took a deep breath as he took his first step up the stairs. He knew keeping the headmaster waiting wouldn't do him any good.
At the top of the stairs, there was a single doorway. On the door there was a sign reading 'Headmaster's office'.
Logan approached the door and prepared to knock. Before he could touch the wood, a feminine voice resounded from the other side.
"Mr. Shade, please enter."
Startled, Logan froze for a second before reaching for the door handle.
'How did she know I was here?'
Logan opened the door and entered the room. There were no lights on, giving the room an evil lair feel. In the middle of the room a desk could be seen. There was a name plate on the desk reading 'Headmaster Black', and sitting behind the desk was a woman with Straight black hair.
She gestured toward one of the chairs in front of her desk for Logan to sit. He moved towards the chair before stopping in place.
"I am sorry Headmaster Black, but I would prefer to stand in this meeting." After speaking his intentions, a gust of wind rushed behind him.
"Insolence! You have been ordered to sit yet you blatantly disobey orders. I should dispose of you right here and now!" A voice behind Logan threatened him for not sitting when he was told to. Logan could feel a hand on his back, most likely from the voice behind him.
"Marcus, enough! Logan has no idea what he was called in for, he is merely putting his training into practice." Calming the voice down, the Headmaster was clearly bothered by his sudden outburst. "If you cannot control yourself I will have no need of you."
"Forgive me Headmaster. I shall take my leave." After speaking, another gust of wind could be heard. The hand that was on Logan's back also vanished.
"I am sorry for Marcus' outburst, he is a new guard." Apologizing for her guards actions, she explained the reason for his outburst. "I would like to say, however, I am not going to harm you. I would like to discuss something with you."
"Is that so? I suppose I can take a seat if you say no harm will come to me." Continuing to walk for the seat, Logan sat down and looked at Headmaster Black. "So why have you called me here? I have not caused any trouble lately and there are better candidates for the academic competition so it must be something else."
"Very perceptive Mr. Shade. You are correct, it has nothing to do with that." Confirming Logan's deductions, Headmaster Black leaned forward on the desk and rested her chin on her knuckles. "First, I would like to congratulate you. You have finally turned 16."
"Thank you, however I feel you didn't call me here to wish me a happy birthday, did you?"
"Once again, you are correct. I have a mission for you."
-----
Walking out of Headmaster Black's office, Logan walked back to his class and took his seat. No one could read the expression on his face, it was the same as when he was called into the headmaster's room.
The day went on as if he was never called away. After class, Logan walked to the front of the school. Waiting for him was a black car with a man in a suit waiting by a door.
"Please come this way, Mr. Shade." Opening the door, the man gestured for Logan to hop into the car.
Walking into the car, Logan looked around and saw that there were other kids in the vehicle. They eyed him up and down to see what made him capable of sitting with them. He didn't bother introducing himself and just sat down.
"Hey! You aren't going to bother introducing yourself?" The boy sitting opposite of Logan raised his fist in anger yet Logan remained unphased.
"I see no reason to introduce myself. We each have our assignments and they should be our focus." With nothing more to say Logan closed his eyes and tuned out the rest of the car. The other kids were infuriated at what Logan had said and tried to show him up, but the voice coming from the drivers seat stopped all the protests.
"Shut up, this isn't a place for you to socialize. Shade is right, focus on your assignments or you won't be getting another one." There was a dark message in that response that caused the children to panic, eventually returning to silence once more.
One last child was picked up, before they were driven to a barren wasteland. They had no idea why they were driven here but it must've had something to do with the assignments they were given.
"Remain in the car." With nothing more said the driver left the vehicle and stood outside. With the adult gone the kids started talking once more, all except Logan.
"So, 'Shade', what's your magic aptitude, I bet it's something like dirt." The boy snickered at his apparent insult, but Logan just ignored him. The other kids laughed as well, but the boy seeing that he didn't elicit a response from Logan was about to pounce and attack.
Before he could though, a click was heard and gas poured into the cabin of the car. Some of the kids started panicking, trying to open the door, some though sat still, sure that there was a reason for the gas and allowed themselves to breath it in.
Logan breathed it in and was sent into unconsciousness, excited for what his mission would entail.
