Not because of the trees, nor was it because of the darkness.
They were afraid because of the animals and supposed to be 'monsters' who were lurking inside. Typically, these animals were not monsters, but their ability to hunt and prey on humans was beyond the average capacity of a human.
Hence, the villagers called them monsters.
They knew that the activity of those who were building the magic tower had caused the hunting of these animals to decrease that was why they were thankful. But what was happening now?
