I grabbed Zheng's robes on instinct, shocked by his shout.
Everyone behind the Dowager knelt on the ground, looking terrified as the Emperor unleashed his anger.
I had never seen my husband so angry, and my heart quickened as I watched him about to spiral out of control.
"Zheng'er..." I whispered, but he didn't seem to hear my words.
"Accusing an innocent of a crime is also a crime, Mother! Am I supposed to throw you in prison?"
His back was tense as he continued shouting at the Dowager.
"You spoke of Decorum and traditions as the law! Look at what you are doing! Making a fool of the Royal family in front of the Assembly!"
Zheng's berating filled the air, each sentence growing more impactful.
"An Empress Dowager ought not take part in politics, unless the Emperor is dying or too young! Am I already dead to you, Mother?"
There was no denying the hurt he felt as he asked the question.
