Rumble … Rumble
Rumbling could be heard in the distance, resonating through the stormy atmosphere. The dark clouds loomed overhead, unleashing bolts of lightning that crackled across the sky, as if the Greek gods themselves engaged in an epic battle.
On a desolate and windswept pathway, a man in his late twenties sat in a state of despair. His face was buried between his knees, his hands tightly clutching his head in anguish. Upon closer examination, one would notice the pallor of his complexion, an ashen hue that spoke of prolonged suffering and deprivation. Thick, raven-black locks of hair cascaded down to his shoulders, partially obscuring his anguished eyes. His unkempt beard, grown untamed, added to the disheveled appearance that mirrored the chaos within.
As raindrops mingled with his tears, their union creating rivulets of sorrow on his face, a profound sense of isolation and abandonment enveloped him. The passersby, like specters in the tempest, paid him no heed, their gazes sliding past him as if he were a mere phantom haunting their peripheral vision. Their indifference further deepened the abyss of his desolation, as though he were a forgotten soul lost amidst the cacophony of life.
Wahhh....waahhhh
In the midst of this heartrending scene, a faint cry pierced through the storm's symphony. The man's bleary eyes turned towards the sound, his broken-rimmed glasses unable to fully grasp the sight before him. Through the blur, he discerned a woman—a mother—holding a baby in her arms, seeking solace and protection beneath the shelter of an umbrella held by her husband. The juxtaposition of their familial unity against his own stark solitude only intensified his despair.
"There there my child… we will get home soon," a woman said, caring for a baby with a loving smile on her face while her husband held an umbrella protecting both of them from the heavy storm.
'Mom... Dad,' Alex's thoughts whispered, his voice drowned out by the relentless rain. A pang of grief resonated within him, a yearning for the warmth and love of his parents, now lost to him forever.
The world continued its ceaseless motion, the ebb and flow of life unyielding to his suffering. The man's existence, devoid of hope, felt like a specter haunting the realm of the living.
Splash!
A passing car carelessly splashed dirty rainwater upon him, its obliviousness to his anguish a metaphor for his insignificance in the grand tapestry of existence.
However, amidst his deepest despair, his eyes caught sight of an old lady, weathered by the harshness of life, sitting at the roadside, her legs bleeding, her tattered garments unable to shield her from the elements. She embodied a reflection of his own pain, a stark reminder of the vulnerability and suffering that permeated the human experience.
Splash!
Once again, the passing car callously drenched her in its wake, further disregarding her plight. It was in this moment that a flicker of empathy ignited within the man's tormented soul.
Driven by a newfound purpose, he rose from his desolate perch and rushed to her aid. Cradling her fragile form in his arms, he carried her to a nearby convenience store, seeking refuge from the unforgiving storm. The unrelenting rain and winds pummeled against the storefront, a symphony of nature's fury echoing their shared struggle.
"Are you hungry?" he asked the old lady, his voice infused with a tender concern that belied his own turmoil. The woman nodded in response, her eyes reflecting a mix of gratitude and weariness.
.
Determined to alleviate her suffering, Alex entered the store and bought a warm blanket, nourishing food, and a First Aid Kit. Returning to her side, he gently draped the blanket around her shoulders, providing a shield against the biting cold.
"…May I help you?" Alex asked with the same loving smile to which the lady nodded. He helped her change the clothes while avoiding looking at her bare body, he then covered her with the blanket and gave her the food he brought to replenish her lost energy.
"This may hurt a little, hold my hand in case you feel any pain" Alex then cleaned her wounds and applied medicine to them. Alex finally looked at her face properly after dressing her wounds only to notice her teary eyes.
Alex felt pain in his heart, he didn't know why but maybe it was because she reminded him a bit of his current helpless state and he knew how bad it would have been for her till now.
"Sorry… I should have been more careful." Alex said with a sad face while tears started dripping from the corner of his eyes. He felt as if he had hurt his own mother. The lady wiped his tears and shook her head.
She was not in pain anymore and was feeling a lot better, she had no one to take care of her, not even her own children who abandoned her, but the one who came forward to help her was a stranger who was the same age as her son, and despite being not related with her in any way, he still did so much for her that she felt overwhelmed. She couldn't help but cry as she wasn't even able to thank him as no words came out and she has nothing to repay for his kindness.
Alex sat next to her on the ground with a sad face "You remind me a lot of my mother, she was a caring and kind woman.… My dad was good too but he wore an expressionless face,
I thought he didn't care about us as he never showed his love for me and my mother directly, but he proved his love with his actions, typical father you know." Alex said while reminiscing his memories.
Mothers show their love and care for their sons while Fathers show their love for their daughters. This might be how society works In his opinion. But however, it might look like they love their children earnestly.
Alex's face turned pale the next moment as he was narrating his story "But I lost them both in a car accident while they were on a trip."
Alex lost his parents when he was just fifteen when he was just a cheerful kid who lived comfortably without anything about this cruel world.
"I was sad and depressed when they passed away. After the news of their death reached my relatives they visited me and comforted me. I was just a kid and was swayed away by such kindness but they had ulterior motives, I had inherited the Family business and property my parents left for me."
Alex's face turned red in anger "I trusted them but in the end, they betrayed me, they were only after the money. They asked me to sign some documents and I signed them as they said it was to improve the business, but later on, I came to know that they sold my father's company and everything along with it."
"They threw me out of my own house, the house where I spent my whole childhood, where me and my parents lived in."
"Later on with the help of my Father's friends I completed my study and I worked very hard and joined a small company. I knew how to run a business since my father taught me about the basics. I helped the company grow."
Alex clenched his fist and his nails dug deep in his hand with blood dripping out "but another betrayal, the manager scammed lots of customers, robbed all of the money and ran away, the blame was put on me as my signatures were on most of the documents, no one believed me since I had no proof or witness."
"I wanted to stay with my parents, live a normal and happy life but all I am left with now is pain and a huge debt which I cannot even pay even if I sold my organs."
"Was it wrong to have a normal life?.… Was it wrong to trust people?.… Was it wrong for trying to climb the ladder again after being thrown down"
All that Alex paid for showing his kindness was... 'BETRAYAL'
The old lady held Alex's hand, leaned closer and kissed him on his forehead, she then placed his head on her shoulder and slowly stroked his hair. Alex stopped crying, he felt at ease, he felt a warmth that his heart was longing for….. He felt safe.
Time passed by, a couple of minutes Alex slowly lifted his head and looked at the lady with a loving smile "Sorry for pestering you with my sad story, you must have a hard time too."
Reaching out, he took her weathered hand in his, a gesture of unity and shared resilience. "Why don't you stay with me? I know it may seem like a lot to ask, but I promise to take care of you. I will love you as if you were my own mother. Will you come with me?"
Small drops of misty water fell on Alex's hand,
The lady nodded her head with a large smile on her face, she couldn't have wished for something better than this in her entire life which was….. a loving son.
Alex carried the lady on his back while she was having a smile she never had in her entire life, a warmth she never felt before.
"Then let's go!" Alex said with a bright smile and started walking. With steadfast determination, Alex took his first step onto the road, his heart brimming with the belief that, despite the hardships they had endured, their shared journey held the promise of a better future.
He saw the crossing signal green and began to cross the road.
Skkreechhh....
But fate is a bitch, it had a different plan in store. The screeching sound of tires skidding, and the piercing wail of brakes, shattered the air. In an instant, their metal against flesh collided with the merciless forces of reality.
Alex and the lady were on the road covered in a pool of blood around them. Alex was holding his life on a thread as he could feel his senses fusing off. He was hit by a truck which was probably being driven by a drunk driver. He could also hear the faint sound of people screaming nearby.
His gaze found the old lady he was with, Alex smiled as he saw the old lady smiling back at him even when she was at death's door.
'Looks like nothing good will happen to me.'
'The gods betrayed me this time huh?'
'Well, at least I had found something I was longing for before'
'Death.'
'I guess this is it.'
'THE END'
With a blinding flash of light, darkness enveloped him, and his journey, both tragic and hopeful, came to a close.
