Chapter 80 - The Lions Den?!

Having nothing else to do besides travel along the stone brick wall that seemed to stretch for miles, I put my hands in the pockets of my combat suit, which I materialized and updated to match the style of humans, and started strolling down the right side of the wall, hoping to reach the entrance my night, though unlikely.

Five hours after walking, the moon was high in the sky, illuminating the surrounding pasture, as well as the entrance, which was lined with what looked like steel, but I should know better. As for where I am, I am a couple of meters away from the place I need to enter, silently cracking my left arm and right leg. Cutting a couple more wounds, hefting my bag of coins over my shoulder, I took a deep breath and stumbled out, screaming for help, dragging my broken leg, and hounding my broken arm, I kept making a ruckus until I got the guards attention.

"Hey, who's there?" Both the guards were holding halberds with glowing blades. In the guard's eyes, they saw a tall man, leg, and arm broken, and seemingly have been bitten by a giant creature. Staying in their position, they waited until the wounded man reached them, cold eyes piercing into the strangers.

'Ah, my predictions were correct. With no real moral obligations, they are just men waiting for the next payday. With the way, they are looking at me, and the way they are looking at my pack, they would not let me be thorough without me giving something up. Well, good thing I prepared for such a situation.' I thought, happy that they were greedy.

"G-guards, I implore you! Please let me take refuge in this kingdom! I was attacked by a strange monster, the size of a small house, with arms the size of trees! I have lots of money, so I hope I can pay my way through. Will this be enough?" I asked, trying to provoke them. Skeptically, they took the bag that I handed them, counting hundreds of golden coins.

'What?! How can someone that is so injured have this much gold?! Well, not my place to ask. If I attack him, one of the higher families might retaliate, and, we would get handsomely paid for just letting someone in! As far as I can see, there is no downside.' Both guards thought.

"Alright, you may enter." the guard on the right said, handing me a wooden tab, slightly glowing. If they could have had money symbols put inside the guard's eyes, they would have. Anyways, I managed to get in. maintaining my pained, but the grateful expression, I hobbled between the guards, who parted to let me in.

The archway is much more intricate than I thought, as well as well guarded. Magic circles lined the inside of it, emanating an aura of destruction. As I noticed these attack formations, the tablet I held as my life depended on it glowed bolden creating a spot of warmth on my wet chest. Hobbling a little faster, I needed to get out of the range of fire, just in case those circles saw through my act.

As soon as I was out of the earshot of the guards, who I could hear gurgling all the coins and laughing, I talked to myself. "I wonder why they did not care about my injuries, or that I said there would be a massive threat to the kingdom. I know that I thought they would not care about their jobs, but every citizen must make society run smoothly, which is the exact opposite of what they were doing.

"If this is the case with all of the common-place authority, then I find it hard to believe that a kingdom of this size would be able to sustain itself. With this in mind, there should be some upper echelon that could manage the middle-class authority or some other type of higher rank that could keep order in place.

"If that is the case, then not everyone in this place could be as self-absorbed as the guards. If that is the case, then it might be a bit easier to leech off of the people in this place, as well as climb the ranks. The trouble is, how am I supposed to get high up in the ranks in just one month? The answer is getting a better rep in the kingdom." I thought out loud, not knowing that I was wandering down the center of town, getting odd looks from onlookers.

"Young man, are you okay?" An old man came up to me and said, taking into account my little tab and all the injuries I had.

"What do you think?!" I said, putting some force behind these words. Like anyone who would be hurt, they would be in constant pain, making their manners disappear in an instant.

"Sorry, it is out of habit. If you would like a place to rest and heal up, then follow me." The strange man whispered, reminding me of Argas. Hoping something like this would happen, I nodded silently, following after him, glaring at the people staring at me, which repelled them.

Seems that people here are just like the ones back on Earth. Anyways, following this stranger down the main road and a small street, we soon arrived at a bar called Lions Den, although I could not guess even on a good day why. Pushing open the swinging doors, we both entered the quiet pub, which is closed for tonight.

"May not look like much, but it's home. Anyways, there are a couple of rooms on the second floor. The only one I know of that is not taken is number 5. Breakfast is four coppers, lunch is six coppers, and dinner is two silver marks. I assume, by the way, you are dressed, that you can afford that, right?" The old man said, making inferences that would seem unbiased.
