Emma Pov
"Why do you always come here?" Sara hunched her back against the railing tilting her head to my direction.
"To see the sunset, of course."
"Whatever is so beautiful about the sunset."
"Everything." I rolled my eyes and tied my scarf tighter. "Alright, I think break is over." Sara groaned and forced her shoulders and feet to move forwards.
The weekends were always busy. Guests and the mansions owners would hurdle, throwing all the maids into a scurry. You would hear names being thrown across, intensive cleaning and the headmaid throwing her weight around. I hated the weekends.
"Emma!"
"Lia!" lia, my little sister, although not by blood we had formed a deep connection in this vast mansion. I took her into my arms, she was small and just 6 years old. "Emma, the headmaids calling for you."
"Really? Alright, thank you. you go play out with the kids yeah?" I place her down and pinch her cheeks. Lia walks away and I clean my hands from the cleaning the dishes.
As soon as I was about to walk away, Clea shouts to me, "Oi! Make sure you convince her to give us bigger portions for meals, okay?" I laugh and nod my head. I just hope she doesn't give me nothing too exhausting.
The mansion ordained two stair cases built next two eachother like a curved line, lined with dark red carpet. It's handles were gold studded with diamonds. It always awed me how wealthy the masters of this mansion were although it had been 13 years since I'd been working here.
Soon I had come to a hault infront of the head-maids room, the door opened and I was welcomed with a warm smile. The head-maid wasn't evil or entirely mean although she was strict and ordered, she respected those who worked hard and sincerely. That's probably why the other maids always took me up to heads with her.
"You wanted me?" I return her smile and she gestures me to come in. "Yes, I've an important task to delegate to you."
"And that would be?"
"Here." She grabs my hand and places an envelope in it. A letter?
"Open it, read it. I think you'd like it."
The paper creaks open and its content fill my eyes with confusion. "An opportunity to a scholarship?"
The head-maid beamed, "Yes! What do you think?"
"I'm not sure...." Yes, I've always wanted to have the opportunity to go outside and live a life that every other normal person does. I could get an education, then a job and live my life peacefully with Lia after I pay off her debt. But. But there's no way they're giving me this without a price.
When my eyes bore into hers, she started speaking, "Emma, this piece of paper that I attained for you was done with alot of hard-work. If you accept this, you'd just have to do a very small job and you're free."
'I'd be free? From this birth-given slavery?'
"No one gets out of this mansion with full freedom, no one alive at least." I scoff, I've seen the bodies being dragged away in utter disgrace, the woeful cries haunting the dwellers of this cursed mansion everyone.
"I can guarantee you your freedom and your reward along with the scholarship." The headmaid stiffens up, affirming me with her bood gaze.
"With what?" And thats when I saw a faint smirk playing on her lips.
