Susan dipped the white towel into the bowl and wriggled it, watching in distaste as the water turned red. Cleaning somebody's injury was not on her list of things to do, but she couldn't help it when William showed up in front of her house with a severely bruised lip and cheek.
Her lips formed a thin line when the man groaned as she tried to dap the towel on his injury to clean the blood, "What did you say happened to you again?"
"I was robbed on my way back from a friend's house."
"Did you get into a fight with the robbers?"
"What? No! I was only trying to reason with them." William's eyes closed as she brought the towel close to his lips.
Susan's mouth drew together. It was so typical of William to think he could reason with robbers. She could bet all her pieces of jewellery on the fact that the man was trying to tell the robbers that he was a member of the high society and therefore he shouldn't be robbed. "What did they steal from you?"
