Jack paused when he saw the nine jobs on the crew list. He had thought that, apart from the mechanics, only unskilled personnel had joined the crew in Mykena but it seemed he was mistaken. It was a little embarrassing to share so little time with the crew that after weeks he still didn't know all their Jobs and names but he had other things to worry about right now.

He closed the list again and picked up the communicator. After a moment, he had Commander Vander on the line.

"I was thinking about filling up my crew here, would you be so kind as to send me a list of the prisoners I can take with me?

"Why the change of heart? Until a few hours ago, you only wanted the woman."

"A situation has arisen and I may well need some people who have held a gun before and look fierce enough not to have to use it immediately."

The commander growled, taking it as a sign that he understood.

"Ok, I'll have a list sent to you, I assume you'll want to take off as soon as possible then?"

"Damn right and do you happen to have a firing range free? I'd like to see these guys in action for a minute first."

"Anything else, you want me to outfit them for you and make them a sandwich for the road?"

"You'd do that?"

It was quiet for a moment at the other end.

"I'll send you the list and see that we can leave tomorrow."

"much appreciated."

Under normal circumstances, Jack would have been super satisfied after such an exchange, but right now the only thing he felt was impatience and worry. If they were still in the game, Jack would have extorted even more favours from the commander and asked for military-grade Weapons for his crew and a few soldiers that would not ask questions and follow orders for money, but sadly he had no idea how to do that now.

He took a deep breath before taking the Communicator again.

"This is you captain speaking. Sadly I must inform you that we have trouble ahead. Our security officer, my dear daughter has been taken hostage and I intend to get her back. Sadly the kidnappers are some of house Vallaints elites. I will try to solve this as diplomatic as possible, still, anyone who has a problem with acting against House Vallian has to leave the ship now. Any later changes of mind will be seen as mutiny and treated accordingly. ... Last thing, anyone who is willing and able to use a firearm can meet me at the shooting range, the commander will provide later to get a little practice in."

...

Later after choosing a few People from Vanders' list, Jack was standing in a small room overseeing the shooting range. Mordred was with him and Voideye had followed them as well.

The Pistoleer, Zeni was the first one to enter. She took some time to choose her pistols, then fired at some targets at short and medium range. Her accuracy was great and she was decently fast. Jack was satisfied she had not lied to Willy. He liked the old man, despite not talking to him very often.

"Why do you think she's hiding her race?"

Mordred seemed to be earnestly curious and Jack just shrugged his shoulders. The woman could shoot, he didn't care about anyone else right now.

Next, a group of five men entered.

They looked like they were waiting for something, so Jack activated the loudspeaker.

"I want you to show me if you can shoot, that's all I want to know from you."

One of the men turned to him. He started to talk, but the intercom only worked in one direction. Jack was annoyed for a moment at the idiot who had designed the system, then he motioned the other two to follow him. Zeni, who was already waiting downstairs at the door, also joined them.

...

The Voidfarer captain seemed relatively impressive to the mercenary. He and one of his men had already fought on several battlefields and planets until they had chosen the wrong side and ended up here.

Nevertheless, the giant behind the captain definitely had combat experience and the woman with the black eyes made him shiver involuntarily.

"We are, er were a mercenary force, we're all or none."

The captain stared at him without blinking and replied in a cold tone.

"And why would I want you on my ship?"

"We have experience, Juergen over there is an explosives expert, we are a well-coordinated team."

The man just continued to look at him blankly. Normally, the mercenary would not have been particularly impressed, but something seemed to strengthen the man's aura, for he felt the pressure emanating from him almost physically.

"Come on, boys, let's show what we've got."

Fortunately, the men already had experience in showing off their skills. She had already worked a time or two for rich and extravagant people who were not only interested in efficiency but also in style.

Fortunately for her, too, Jack had no real idea of what combat or teamwork looked like. He relied entirely on Mordred, who had seen the group's potential right from the start, to make his decision.

At the end of the event, Jack decided on the mercenary force and also a sniper and two former scouts who, according to their own statements, were only in prison because they had seen too much. Neither of them knew what exactly it had been. After all, they had learnt their lesson.

Jack was very satisfied with the day's results. He didn't trust the newcomers at all and was far from being the only one. Mordred, for example, had decided to sleep in the new armoury for the time being and Lyna had begun to lock her door. Only one of the crew had left the ship, but Jack knew when they were finished on Vallia a few more would have gone missing.

Commander Vander, on the other hand, was happier than he had been for a long time. She had a holiday in the capital coming up and Jack had taken not one but two of her biggest problems on board. Unlike the voidfarer, she was able to sleep extremely well that night.
