Chapter 2 - Only The Strong Prevail

Dew could tell from the look Scully was giving him, it might have been a good idea to have stayed home and quit his job as a miner.

Although Dew was dirt poor, he was still alive. This is more than many in Dew's level of poverty can say. After all, in a world where the strong rule and the weak serve and gather their scraps, most who have no money or power are completely screwed. Dew knew this, and from looking into Scully's eyes, he could tell he was in for the beating of a life time. He always thought his boss was a psychopath hiding in a shell of normalcy.

Dew's theory originated years ago, when he was new to the job and didn't really know anyone. He joined the mining team before the price of steel went up, so obtaining the job was much easier than it would today. This also meant that he was paid even less, but it was okay because as far as he was concerned, a job, was better than no job.

On his first day in the mines, he was still very young and wanted to strike up a conversation with everyone he met. This annoyed all of the other miners who had been working in the company for years, and felt they didn't have time for tomfoolery. Even still, his young and naive self wanted to make a friend, so he continued to walk up to the workers and greet them. Eventually he met a few that were new like him, and had a decent conversation with them about how they felt about the new job.

They were very alike, and even on the first day Dew felt he was growing a bond with the group of newbies. They all learned how to use a pickaxe and were to mine from an instructor, and began to work as a team to excavate the ore from the sides of the mine.

Soon the first day came to an end, and Dew who was exhausted from the hard labor told his group he was going to head home, as the work day had come to an end. They agreed with him, as they too were tired from the hard day of work, and started to head for the exit.

On their way, Dew realized that he really needed to use the bathroom, as he didn't have a chance when he was working. He told his group to go on ahead, as he would catch up with them later. They agreed to this, so they temporarily parted ways as he headed for the bathroom on the left wing of the mine.

When in the bathroom, he heard snickering and footsteps walking down the main tunnel his group had gone through. Still in the bathroom, he listened to the sound of the shoes, reminding him of the steel-toed shoes he had saw Scully wear today.

Exiting the bathroom, he headed down the main tunnel from the left wing, not seeing his boss anywhere. When he ran down the tunnel to look for his group, he couldn't find them anywhere, so he assumed they went home.

Dew would later find out that his group had apparently "quit and left town to find another place to work". This didn't make any sense to Dew, as they had seemed stocked to get a job at the mine, and they didn't even tell him that they were thinking of leaving. For these reasons, Dew was suspicious that something bad had happened to them, and his boss walking down the hallway from where his group went made him a suspect for their disappearance.

When he would tell the other employees of his theory, they would glare at him like he was crazy and tell him to "piss off". From this, he could tell they would be of no help, and he never tried to bond with any of the other employees after that, which was for the best as most of them were mean and self centered.

So when in the present day he looked down at his boss with murder painted on his face. He knew he must have been correct, and that although there were other people around him, they wouldn't do jack shit if he was beaten to a pulp.

As he was thinking this, his boss began to move towards him, slowly walking up the stairs as he neared Dew. He saw this, and turned around to run with perspiration collecting on his brow, and clammy hands clenching together so hard they were leaving indents in his palms. Dew began to run to the exit, his feet pounding the gritty floor, and his heart feeling like it would explode.

From behind him, Dew heard a whistling sound as air parted around a fast moving object. This object, was Scully, as he raced forward over taking Dew with ease. As Dew looked in front of him, he saw Scully grinning ear to ear, as he was an F-ranked physical adventurer, so beating up a normal person like Dew was all too easy. Dew stopped sprinting, his heart beating out of his chest as he prepared to fight or flee.
