Outside the window, thunder boomed.
"Will you come to see me?"
"No."
"Will you be with someone else?"
"Yes."
"Will you forget about me?"
"Yes."
"Did you ever love me?"
"No."
"Congratulations, your great revenge is complete, your wish fulfilled."
Another loud thunderclap, and Eliza Morgan's eyes snapped open, awakening from her dream. The first thing she saw was her mother Florence Morgan's hand, picking up a blanket that had fallen to the ground, covering Eliza with it.
"Another nightmare?"
Eliza Morgan had many bloodshot eyes: "Mom."
Florence Morgan patted her shoulder: "It's all in the past, all in the past."
Outside, there was a torrential downpour, the first of the spring this year.
In the evening, Eliza Morgan received a call from Inspector Gold.
"Maxwell Palmer hasn't hired a lawyer, he says he wants to defend himself." Inspector Gold asked, "Will you come on the day of the trial?"
The case was to be tried next week.
Eliza Morgan said, "No."
