Chapter 5: Gwen's Future
...
I just forced a laugh at what aunt Adelyn said. Me? Miles's girlfriend? It's very impossible and so random. We aren't fit for each other. And also, he's not my type. Although, he doesn't look so bad. But I don't look at the outside appearance. I want someone nice and considerate to people.
"We should get you some clothes and shoes. You'll be at school from Monday to Friday so you need more clothes that you can wear. I want you to look nice," she told me before leading me into a boutique. Items here look undoubtedly expensive.
"Uhm, auntie?" I called to get her attention because she was already looking some clothes for me.
"Yes?" she asked while still browsing the apparel. "Oh, look at this." She pulled out a pink blouse from the hanging board. "It'll look good on you, I'm sure."
"Aren't the clothes in this place expensive, auntie? I mean, you don't have to buy me these kinds of clothes. I love simple ones, also," I told her, trying to change her mind about shopping in this boutique.
"Gwen, don't you think I'm too rich to worry about my money?" she joked as she put the blouse in front of me, trying to see if it will fit to me.
"Yeah, auntie. But don't you think that I shouldn't be the one whom you're spending your money to?" I asked curiously to her. I know that I'm right about this one. I'm not even her real niece even I call her auntie. It just makes me uncomfortable that she spends her of their money, including uncle Steve's, too much to me.
"But you are Gwen, the daughter of my friend. Our best friend. Did your mother told you that when we were in high school, she helps me sneak out of our house so I can see your uncle?" She chuckled while telling me that.
I also had a smile on my face when I got the idea. Aunt Adelyn was escaping from her parents to see his suitor which is uncle Steve! It's cute to think of how they got together. Until now, they look very sweet to each other. It's a mystery why their son isn't nice, though. I'm joking.
"And also, I don't see that our money is being wasted on you, Gwen. You're a hard working person which makes your mother very proud of you. I just wanted to give you what you deserve," she explained to me so I smiled.
"You don't know how much I'm thankful that you and uncle are there for me and my mom. I'll pay the both of you as soon as I get succesful," I assured her.
"I'll wait for that day," she happily said.
Then, we came back to finding some clothes that I'll use for school. I'm not much of a fashionista because I always tend to be simple. But auntie Adelyn here made me believe that being an extraordinary woman is not bad. After she paid for the clothes that we have chosen, we went also into a shoe store to look for some shoes.
"We should buy you at least five pairs of shoes," she said and I almost choked because I was drinking the smoothie we bought. Thankfully, I didn't. We'll be embarrassed here in the store if I did.
"Pardon, aunt Adelyn?" I asked to make sure if I heard her right.
"I said, we should buy five pairs of shoes that you'll use," she repeated.
"Auntie, I don't need a lot of shoes. We can just buy only one pair," I told her seriously.
"How about four pairs?" she asked me and I shook my head to say no. "Three?" I still said no. "Okay, last request. We should buy two."
I didn't object because I feel bad or rejecting her offers already. I also know that this shoe store doesn't sell budget friendly shoes. But as what she says, it's her money. She'll be the one to decide what she'll do with it. But as her loyal niece-like person, I'll make sure that she'll never regret giving me these things. I'll work and study hard so I could be successful and when the day comes, I'll pay for everything he and uncle did for me.
After our shopping, aunt Adelyn drove me home. She and my mom talked on the living room while I was cooking our dinner. Mom and I insisted that she should have dinner here at our home. I also know that aunt Adelyn is not the type of person who always want expensive food. When mom was still able to walk, she's the best cook. I remember the days when uncle Steve and aunt Adelyn come here just to taste my mom's recipes.
"I can't thank you enough, Adelyn. Don't worry, once I get through all of this. I'll work hard so I can pay everything you've done for us," my mom told her. I can hear their conversation because the kitchen isn't very far from the living room.
"Emma, you don't need to pay me. As long we see that Gwen is studying hard, that's a payment to us already. But even so, still you promise that you'll recover sooner. Don't lose hope, okay?" aunt Adelyn said to her.
"I have children who needs a mother, Adelyn. They're my inspiration for having a hope on being able to walk again someday. And yes, I won't lose hope. I still have a lot of things to hope for," she answered which made me smile genuinely.
I was putting plates on the dining table and Carson also helped me. When the food was ready, I told them we can eat already. I went to mom's bedroom where Jacob is sleeping. He was sleeping like an angel so I didn't bother to wake him up anymore. I'll just put some food aside for him. I went back to the dining area so I could also eat already.
"This tastes very delicious, Gwen. I can't wait to see you as the chef of one of our restaurants world wide," aunt Adelyn said after she tasted the soup I made.
I can't wait too, auntie.
