"How about I make you some vegetable soup?" Rowan said as he rummaged through his cupboard for the carrots.
They didn't belong in the cupboard at all, but there hadn't been room in the basket on his counter. He distinctly recalled stashing the carrots somewhere so he could find them easily. If only he could remember where that was.
Wren sat quietly at the kitchen table, watching his every move as if he were worried Rowan might climb into the cupboard and disappear.
Since Wren had already suffered enough, Rowan decided to have mercy on him. He bypassed the lentils and pulled out some potatoes and barley from the shelf instead. He gave up hope of finding the carrots and shut the cupboard door, but after a moment he returned for the salt and a few jars of dried herbs that Wren had strategically placed at the front of one of the shelves as a hint.
