A *thump* followed by the *clang* of what sounded like metal falling on the floor came from the kitchen, startling Rowan awake. He'd been sleeping late every day and napping in the afternoons, giving his body all the rest it asked for, partially to keep Wren from breathing down his neck about it, but mostly because he actually needed it.
"Now what are you doing?" He closed his eyes again and buried his face in the pillow.
"Nothing." Wren answered from out of sight around the corner, starting their typical morning routine. "Don't come out here."
Rowan unburied his face and cracked his eyes, his suspicion roused by the tone of Wren's voice.
"If it's nothing, why can't I come out there?"
"Because I asked you not to, and honestly, it wouldn't hurt you to let me have my way once in a while. Go back to sleep."
Another *clatter* on the floor ended any possibility of Rowan going back to sleep even if he wanted to.
