Chapter 6 - So I'm a skeleton

Moving back to the present, Marcus found himself staring into an endless abyss, his thoughts echoing endlessly as the sheer emptiness drove him to the brink of insanity.

"Where even am I?"

The voice in his mind only echoed further, prying his mind open inside out.

Suddenly tears flew from Marcus' eyes but disappeared just as fast. A strange ripping sound forced Marcus' tears to halt as his bicep fell off his arms like fibres, Leaving an empty feeling near his arm.

Marcus felt different. His senses were nothing like before

"Just what the hell was that?. It felt like a million different guillotines slaughtered mee silently, ripping me layer by layer, cell by cell."

But soon the obvious reached his mind. He wasn't a human. Although Marcus had been shocked at first, he calmed down very quickly.

The truth was that he wasn't too worried about the change from human to the demon. He already expected to be a demonic race after choosing to be a heretic.

The undead were also Marcus' favourite monsters. Somehow he felt that a fantasy story would never be complete without the inclusion of these walking corpses that envied and hated living. Also, they were the easiest ones to clean up. No blood or flesh to lift. Just vacuum up any bone fragments and you are ready to sell them.

Also, skeletons did not need to eat or breathe, did not tire, were immune to multiple negative status effects such as disease, poisoning, and were resistant to environments with hostile climates such as freezing tundras or places filled with toxins and radiation. It would be perfect for the title.

Marcus has a deep hatred for the human empire and it wouldn't be one that would be extinguished by a chance at rebirth.

"Well, no use of crying over spilled milk. But first, I'll have to confirm something. But now is not the time."

The characteristics of the skeletons were not all the same as the ones in web novels back when he was on Earth. Here, some would be able to keep moving even if their skulls were destroyed, while others turned to ash if they were hit by sunlight.

Marcus not only didn't have night vision like most of the undead he knew from Webtoon, with a lack of basic sense and ethics. He no longer felt the need or care to act as a human. His personality became open, similar to his senses.

His senses collided and intersected in a weird combination, numbing his sense of fear and hesitation as trepidation no longer existed, just like fear or any feeling related to an overload of emotions.

"Okay, let's start with the basics."

"Inventory" A scraping voice spoke out. His bones collided with the soft mana to produce a sound without colliding his bones with one another.

Instantly a transparent checkered window appeared before him. The inventory was divided into square boxes. It seemed similar to the one he had back when he was brave, so the storage capacity should increase as he levelled up so Marcus wasn't worried about this.

He then closed his inventory and focused his attention on his second skill, [Primal Sense]. Although Marcus didn't know what this skill was, he deduced that it was a replacement for the 5 human senses, so without much thought, he activated it.

A second after activating the ability, everything went from being dark to having Defined neon highlights. Sounds would be more like a wave, rippling the image, like a ripple disturbing still water. The smell was non-existent, with herbs he ate directly replenishing all the mana he had consumed during speaking. It was different from sight, if it could be compared to any other sense of the body it would be a mixture of touch and hearing too.

Of course, Marcus still couldn't hear or feel any kind of texture, it was more like he could perceive white lines of different shapes and sizes that formed the edges of the objects around him.

That way he could tell he was in a cave with rocks and stalactites all over the place. He could also tell that its body was all bones, he couldn't see colours, but from his point of view, it looked like a black skeleton with white lines marking every part of its body.

Just like in fantasy novels that included systems, it was normal here to get abilities after performing one or several actions a certain amount of times, completing quests, or just simply fulfilling some requirements to rank up.

Marcus hoped that if so, he could become something stronger than just a common Skeleton, such as a [Skeleton King] or a [Lich]. Especially considering Diablo had also taken a Lich stream and ranked up to become a [Bloody Lich] before evolving to [Arch Devil] after which, he should reanimate his body using the body of a properly evolved demon and evolving the source of life within the Devil's body to become a demon

Once Marcus finished checking his character status, he started to walk around and explore his surroundings. Also since he didn't have a weapon, he tried to find something to defend himself against possible enemy monsters.

Since his body was nothing more than a pile of bones, he didn't think he could defeat someone empty-handed. But the only useful thing he found was a stone little bigger than his hand. Though under the circumstances it was better than nothing.

//Sorry for the short chapter, I gotta go out today, and my last exam is today so I went out on a party. Will upload more often from now on...

//Credit to why reincarnate as a useless skeleton. I did blatantly rip off quite a bit of the status page and the fight scene.
