Chapter 34 - chapter 34 Poor Bird

This kind of luxury was the first for him. He had never seen priceless cultivation materials being treated like common vegetables. Neither had he eaten meat from beasts powerful beyond imagination. Zhang Jian was like an endlessly deep treasure trove but the way he used those heavenly treasures made his heart ache a little.

He was excessively hungry since he had worked out without using his cultivation as per the instructions received from Cerberus. How could he not be starving? It was no surprise when he gorged himself full with anything that he could reach. Only after he had a mouth full of anything that was within his reach, did he find it in him to calm down.

By that time, the other two were looking at him with strange eyes.

Wang Yan had a condescending look on her face that revealed what she had been thinking; that Wu Ming was a greedy parasite which made him ashamed of himself.

While the look on Zhang Jian's face revealed another story. He wasn't looking down on Wu Ming at all. It was a look filled with pity and consolation. Zhang Jian thought that Wu Ming's business had gone bankrupt and he had fallen out of grace making him live a destitute life with no support. Seeing him eat so hurriedly made him realize that Wu Ming must have undergone many hardships before he reached there.

Wu Ming was looking away from the corners of his eyes since he couldn't bear the stares. Before he could feel comfortable, he saw the Bluebird seemingly hiding in the corner not daring to look towards the table.

Since he had stayed in the Devil World for quite some time, he knew who this Bluebird was. It was the subordinate of the succuba Lin Xi.

"What is that bird doing here?" Wu Ming asked with some difficulty and his tone seemed to be somewhat questioning.

Zhang Jian didn't mind his tone. He knew some people didn't like birds; maybe Wu Ming was one of those.

"That is a gift from someone; a friend of mine."

"Don't worry; it can't do anything to you here."

Zhang Jian and Wang Yan spoke at the same time to reassure Wu Ming.

"But that's…."

Before Wu Ming could complete the sentence, Cerberus, who had been lounging close to the table, spoke inside his mind to ease his worries.

"That poor bird was planted as a means to spy on Zhang Jian by that succuba but the reality is that it is only a hostage...hahaha...that wretched bird can't even lift its head and look towards us because it is afraid of dying in case it angers Zhang Jian."

After hearing the details of the transaction, Wu Ming knew that Bluebird was in no position to spy and report back to Lin Xi since it knew that the slightest mistake would become the reason for its death.

Even though it could see every single move made by Zhang Jian, it didn't have it in it to report such things to the succuba Lin Xi.

These words from Cerberus pushed down his welling sense of unease after he saw that bird in Zhang Jian's hut.

At the same time, Bluebird was salivating over the food on the table but it didn't dare to ask for it. It knew its own position was no more than that of a hostage so it was unlikely to receive such heavenly treasures from Zhang Jian.

It had been trying to gauge the true power if Zhang Jian but had been unable to do so. Zhang Jian was a true mystery. No aura leaked outside his body and it appeared that Zhang Jian had either reached the ultimate natural state or he was so powerful that Bluebird couldn't even estimate his true strength with his pitiful cultivation level because even one of Zhang Jian's paintings was enough to cause its death.

Their aura had been so terrifying that Bluebird didn't dare to have a single bad thought about Zhang Jian in its heart. It was only because the Bluebird had been experimenting and it had come to know that the paintings would only react to malice and wrong intentions such as killing intent.

Although masking its true intentions allowed it to survive in the hut full of horrors and death traps, it was slowly eating away at its sanity and mental health. The Bluebird had truly embarked on the road to becoming a psychopath.

The true torture for the Bluebird was that it had to hide the malicious intentions it had towards Zhang Jian. It hated Zhang Jian with all its might and every inch of its body. This hate was not because it was being held hostage but because Lin Xi had given it up without a thought just to gain favor from Zhang Jian. The Bluebird had worked hard towards its goal which was to be acknowledged by Lin Xi for all the efforts it had put in for her and in order to gain her favor. It knew that what it wanted was almost impossible to be realized since Lin Xi had never even considered it to be more than a subordinate. Still, there had been a part of it that never stopped wishing for a day when Lin Xi would realize how much it had done for her and would decide to accept its feelings for all that it had done for her without asking anything in return..

Something that it had failed in doing even after myriads of years of its service to Lin Xi, Zhang Jian had done in a matter of days. How could it not hate him but since it couldn't establish exactly how powerful his rival in love was, it didn't dare to say or do anything that revealed its concealed feelings and the flood of emotions it had barely been holding back.

All those concealed emotions turned into hatred for the one person that had been responsible for the ruin that its life had become, Zhang Jian. He had not only received the attention and affection of Lin Xi but had also turned it into a hostage and had restricted its freedom.

It was a pity that all the unjustified hatred prevented it from seeing that the only one who was responsible for the mess that it had been was Lin Xi who had without a single thought decided to use it as a pawn in order to get closer to Zhang Jian. If it could see its situation from a purely objective point of view, then it would have left in a heartbeat and would not have looked back even once for all that it had received for its service to Lin Xi had been a life full of disappointment and servitude.
