Chapter 2 - Historical Accuracy

From his position behind the booth Ken listened for sounds, too afraid to peek. He peeks over the counter and saw a figure creeping into the main hall. He got back down quickly.

Shit! It was a thief!

He could be wrong, but if they were supposed to be here, they wouldn't be sneaking around at this time of night.

He forced himself to relax. This was not that big of a problem. He could just wait them out. Once they were done with whatever they were doing, he could leave.

But... what if they stole something? It would be wrong to let them steal something just to protect himself. He wouldn't get into too much trouble. Should he call the cops on them and leave an anonymous tip?

He peeked over his cover to see what they were upto. They seemed to be walking around and looking at the exhibits carefully. Almost as if they were looking for something.

Moonlight shone through the window and lit their face.

It was a lady. She had short black hair and wore some sort of leather jumpsuit. She didn't look like she belonged here. She looked like a high-tech thief. She walked around fast, not trying to be careful as she looked through the exhibits, grunting in frustration.

If he wanted her to stop her from stealing something he would have to call the cops now. He pulled out his phone and switched it from vibrate to silent, covering it with his shirt to make sure she wouldn't see it's faint glow in the dark.

Ken heard her gasp from the distance as she bent to pick something up. He tried to peer in the dark to make out what she was looking at.

Suddenly, a violent purple glow filled the room. The lady backed away from what seemed like a stone mask that glowed with a freaky purple light.

What the hell?!

The mask exploded, and pieces of stone streaming purple mist swirled away from the centre of the explosion. As he watched, the mist reforged itself into a humanoid figure. The mist solidified and details formed around it. And before he knew it he was looking at a mummy. This wasn't some dirty old toilet-paper movie mummy. This one was regal; it wore an opulent gold headdress, and linen clothing and wrappings over it's body, with it's eyes glowed purple.

Somehow it felt as if... as if it were angry.

Holy crap, screw calling the police, he had to get out of here. He hoped that the lady would do the same-

The lady drew a knife from her belt and lunged at the mummy.

Eh?

The mummy roared and lashed out with a wrapped hand that looked unnaturally big and meaty. It struck her and she flew and crashed into a knight armour exhibit. The sound of steel crashing down echoed through the silent museum.

The guard outside bursts through the door.

"Hey!" he yelled "What in the hell is going on in here?!"

The guard saw the mummy and his face went white. He fumbled at his side for his stun gun as the mummy advanced towards him. Before Ken could even breathe, the mummy had extended it's linen covering like tendrils, grabbed the guard and smashed him against the front wall. He heard something crunch.

He had to do something.

In a moment of panicked clarity he ran towards where the mummy had thrown the thief. She was lying on the floor dazed. He heard the mummy scream behind him attacking the guard. He only had a few seconds before its attention turned his way.

"Come on!" he whispered to her.

She looked at him, confused. He yanked her and ran down the side hallway he entered from with her stumbling behind him. He kicked open the door to mens bathroom and pushed into one of the stalls.

He held his breath, and covered the woman's mouth.

The muffled screams of the mummy came through the door as it tore past the bathroom and down the hallway. He let out the breath and took his hand of the thief's mouth.

"Who the heck are you!?" she asked.

"Let's focus on getting out of here?" he said, thinking about climbing out through the window.

She shook her head, trying to focus.

"Nope. I can't let it escape. It'll kill everything it sees"

Ken hesitated. Goddamn it.

"That thing is a goddamn monster. How do you expect to beat it?"

"Giant purple gemstone heart. We break it" She said, checking her knife.

"... we?"

She tightened some of the straps on her jumpsuit and cracked her neck.

"Yep! Call me Ella! Welcome to the team, we'll handle orientation later. It's too goddamn strong to beat by myself. You'll do great!" she smiled, patting his arm.

Ken sighed.

He unzipped the bag and pulled out a strange metal gadget.

"What's that?" Ella asked, frowning.

"An edge"

He slid it on his arm and lightning crackled.
