Chereads / Phoenix's Alpha / Chapter 35 - Worth the Risk

Chapter 35 - Worth the Risk

Phoenix and Eevi opened their eyes to the same stream.

"What's your connection to this?"

"It's where we met." Phoenix tightened her right hand and began walking towards the tug.

"Pretty place."

"Yes, it was. Can we talk about the fact you have a mate?"

"We are capable of talking about it."

Phoenix laughed, "may we talk about it? No one's around. You can be excited."

Eevi grinned. "He's gorgeous. And he's taking this so well."

"You have no idea. He just flew in from Africa, where he got all the treaties signed while knowing what was happening at home."

"That was him? Oh. You are right, these Belcourt's, they're amazing."

"And they're ours! I'm so pleased for you! But I'm sorry you missed your first touch." Phoenix sighed.

"I didn't. Because I wasn't there to feel it."

"Good. But now I better fill you in on what's happening here," Phoenix said as one of Yvonne's memories started playing in front of them to Eevi's wide-eyed shock.

Eevi listened to Phoenix's explanation in growing glee. "If that's true..."

"It looks like it is. I just had a thought. Share some of you memories of us together. Let it get to know you. And I'll share mine. Let's inundate it with them."

Yvonne looked away from her memory to see one playing that wasn't hers.

Phoenix and a blonde were drinking tea and laughing. She felt her shoulders relax. They were here, she thought. Closing her eyes in relief. Opening them, she started another memory.

"Miss me?" Phoenix asked from beside her.

She looked down at her and seeing her holding out a hand, took it. "Yes."

"It's nice to meet you." A calm soft voice sounded from her other side.

She smiled at the woman who was risking so much for a stranger and took her offered hand as well. "It's wonderful to meet you."

"This next part isn't going to be easy. Your memories will only work so far, I fear. But show the most exciting ones you have. Good or bad. We want to keep it distracted as long as we can. We'll do the same. Three stimulating memories. Might give us a tiny head start. When it realizes we're leaving, we'll have to fight it, and all you can do is hold onto us. Don't let our hands go."

Yvonne nodded and started the fight with Alpha Scott all over again. Phoenix started a memory of saving three packed wolves from a Rogue owned nightclub. Yvonne had to admit the music and lights of that memory were very distracting. Eevi's memory was of a raging water and young version of her holding onto a tiny girl in brown pigtails, Phoenix? as the boat they were in was tossed and turned. They started walking, their speed increasing with each step. Until they were running.

Suddenly the air thickened with a sinister heaviness.

"Keep your memories playing Yvonne. Loud one. Distracting ones!" Phoenix yelled as she swung the sword at a deep blackness.

"Light." Eevi growled and the area was washed with a brilliance.

Yvonne cringed at the creature they were fighting. It moved with spiderlike jerks, had hundreds of small, staring, soulless eyes, and long serrated teeth everywhere, in places where mouths shouldn't be.

It flinched at the light, but when they moved away came back for another swing. One of its feet slicing at Eevi with razor sharp claws. Phoenix swung her sword in a downward arch and left that limb twitching at their feet. They ran as its thunderous roar fill Yvonne's head. Phoenix placed her sword on her shoulder and mumbled something that ended with the word, "abyss."

Yvonne looked behind her. A large chasm that seemed to have no bottom separated them from the creature.

"Is this how you fought the other one?" Eevi panted.

"We have to last until the potion has been metabolize and we have to be a certain distance away to jump out, so yah, I fought it with distance. It wasn't made smart." She rammed her shoulder into Yvonne's side, causing them to fall sideways as it dropped from the sky, just missing them.

"It was made mean." Phoenix jump up and stabbed it in one little eye. Chilling screams issued from all its mouths as it leaped away from them. "How long do we have?"

Eevi shook her head.

"Damn." Phoenix growled. "Mountain." She shouted as she dodged backwards from a pitiless slash aimed for her throat. The ground under their feet began to rise, taking them with it.

"Wind" Eevi added and tornado forces rushed by them and sent it tumbling to the bottom.

"Rockslide" Half the mountain followed. Burying it. They started to run again. And they ran for what seemed like hours to Yvonne. A sudden howl come closer and the sound of a skittering pursuit made her flinch.

"Forest." Phoenix mumbled and behind them trees grew thick and the sound changed to thrashing.

"Wildfire." Eevi growled and a rush of heat beat at their back as its appalling screams were again heard.

"Time to jump." Eevi yelled.

"Cliff." Phoenix shouted and the mountain fell away. They never slowed down taking the leap, but they didn't fall. They were pulled up, clinging to each other. An enrage roar followed them.

Yvonne gasped as it leapt after them, burned, bruised, bloody, and brutal. Phoenix kicked it in a groupings of eyes and slashed another leg off that had caught onto Yvonne's dress.

Eevi called "Hail", as it fell away from them. The hail pushed it back down further. But it seemed to be swimming upstream through it. Coming for more.

"How close?" Phoenix asked, pulling back her arm.

"Seconds." Eevi said, looking above them.

"Worth the risk then." And with that Phoenix hurled her blade down into its largest open mouth. The scream that followed made them all pale.

And then there was silence.
