The first few rounds of bullet shred through the unprepared mass of enemies, but that moment of advantage didn't last long as the nanomachines began warning me of several projectiles heading my way.
I quickly dove into another building's window and came face to face with a family that was hiding beneath a marble table; judging by the interiors, that was most likely their kitchen. There was a very rudimentary stove powered by mana, and around us there were many jars containing rice and other ingredients.
They looked at me with a terrified gaze. I could see them pleading with me to spare them, but I couldn't risk them turning on me; the situation was precarious enough already for me to take a risk such as that; moreover, they were going to die anyway.
