Chapter 14 - Shocking Behavior

It was dark outside now and Malachi was leaning against one wall. While Natasha sat balling her eyes out in the chair next to him. She had been crying into his shoulder for probably an hour. Others had shown up now and she'd gone to half talk half sob with them.

Ariel stood off to the side just blankly staring out the window, but not seeing it. Their father had not lived through the surgery. Marie was sitting next to Natasha holding her hand as she sobbed. His father had also shown up and was talking with the doctor on the sisters' behalf.

There were a few cops that were stationed here in the waiting room. Many of those that weren't related to them, or even knew them watched. They offered their sympathy when they had heard, and they did know them by name.

"Oh sweet heart." Marie said pulling Natasha against her. "At least he didn't suffer. They said that he never regained consciousness."

"I know." Natasha said with a slight sob. The doctor moved over to them and looked like he really didn't want to come over here. But he spoke softly.

"We will need an identification. For legal purposes, whenever either you and or your sister feel you are able too." Natasha sobbed a bit harder, Ariel cleared her throat, and spoke. It cracked a lot but she looked more composed than Natasha.

"I can come, you don't have to Natasha." Natasha moved standing and gave her sister a nasty glare. No one really seemed to notice it, but a couple of them. Ariel hadn't been nasty about it, it sounded more like she was willing to take the burden so that Natasha wouldn't have to.

"Let's go." Natasha said lifting her chin a bit. Ariel moved with behind her sister her head down and shoulders slumped. The two of them disappeared down a hall and went with the doctor down to where their parents had been taken.

They came into a room where there were a few tables and led over to two of them that had bodies that were covered with sheets. "I know this is hard, and we can make this quick." The two of them gave a nod.

The first sheet was pulled back and it was their father. There was bruising around his left eye, and a thin slice along his jaw. Natasha put a hand to her mouth sobbing again and Ariel spoke, barely audible.

"That's our father." The doctor gave a nod. Natasha turned around as they moved to their mother, and the sheet was pulled back again. She looked like she might just be sleeping except for her color was off.

"Yes." Ariel said, and that was all she could say. She was upset about her parents dying, and at the same time almost relieved. Not happy, not at all and she was grief stricken, but there was an odd relief that made her feel even more horrible about herself.

"That will be all. I can take you back up now." The doctor said leaving the mortician who covered their mother back up. They went up the hall and a flight of stairs both in a kind of numb shock. The doctor pointed them down the hall back toward the waiting area. He turned leaving them and they moved back to the others.

"It's your fault." Natasha said suddenly into the silence. Ariel stopped walking looking at her sister who wiped at her face. "You're probably happy that they are dead." Ariel's face looked shocked, her red eyes watering more.

"That is a horrible thing to say Natasha." Ariel replied and this time she did let out a sob.

"Well its true! You, who could never do anything right and failed at everything. When dad needed you most you let him die!" They had stopped their walk back down the hall to the others.

"No I didn't!" Ariel denied her voice not as raised as Natasha's was. Ariel had tried to go up to where her father was and had been dragged back down by staff. How could she say that?

"I tried!"

"You should have tried harder! They're dead and you didn't even try to help them, you should have been at home, maybe they could have gotten rid of you instead and I would have mom and dad! Not a lousy excuse for a sister!" People were rushing down the hall toward them. Natasha was practically screaming in Ariel's face.

Ariel couldn't see with the tears streaming down, of all the hurtful and mean things that had been said to her over the years. This was quite possibly the worst yet, and it pained her so bad. Her parents hadn't loved her like they had Natasha, but she'd loved them. Given them everything she had of herself.

"I tired, I'm sorry." Ariel sobbed nearly yelling. Natasha hit Ariel across the jaw with a closed fist seeming to lose it. It was clear she wanted to take her pain and anger out on someone, and that someone was Ariel.

"You're sorry? YOU'RE SORRY!" She leapt on Ariel who shoved at her sister to get her off. Natasha grabbed a fistful of hair, and yanked.

"Natasha! Ariel!" Someone shouted, and then they were being pulled apart. Ariel had a split lip but Natasha seemed okay. Nick had pulled Natasha away, and Vento had grabbed Ariel pulling her away.

"Let go of me!" Natasha said and stormed off down the hall. Ariel was crying hard. Harder than she ever had before and put her face in her hands.

"Go calm Natasha down before she does something rash again. Take her home, I'll bring Ariel with me." Malachi just gave a nod and looked at Ariel who was sobbing hard. He felt more for her than he did for Natasha at that moment. That was quite possibly the worst display he'd ever seen anyone do to a family member with what had happened today. Malachi wished to console her but went after Natasha instead.

"It's okay Ariel. It's not your fault." Vento said, and pulled the young crying woman to him to help calm her. Normally not something he did, but this young woman was hurting bad inside where no one could see. What happened was wrong, and she needed someone.

"No, she's right." She said sobbing into his shoulder. "I should have tried harder."

"Tried what harder? There was nothing that could be done for either of your parents. There's nothing you can do about it. Don't blame yourself, you weren't even there."

"But I could have helped, I'm different. Why didn't I try harder?" He frowned a bit and pulled her back to look at her.

"Ariel just because you might have a gift, doesn't mean that it could help save a man that was so severely injured not even professional doctors could help him. You'll find that being different or special, isn't what it's cracked up to be. Normally it's just a nuisance that gets in the way. Being special does not make you a god."

"It still hurts. What she said, I've never done anything to make her hate me so. At least I didn't think I did."

"I know." He said looking at her, as she was starting to calm down a bit. "She's just upset, come we'll head home. A good night sleep is what you really need. It won't take it away, but let's get you somewhere to rest okay?" Ariel just nodded and let him lead her away down the hall.
