Chapter 6 - Chapter Six: Fishing

I awoke to the smell of eggs and saw that on the table next to me was a plate filled with scrambled eggs. I picked up the plate, it was still warm, and slowly with my fork picked up a bit of the fluffy goodness. Amazing simply amazing. But how did he have fresh eggs? This thought was washed away by the taste of the food, and I went to town, before I knew it the plate was empty, and my stomach was full. I slowly rose out of the bed and went to the kitchen, where I saw him seemingly waiting for me in a chair.

"Today is your first day of training, I am your sensei after all." He was serious when he said all that insanity before? "Now don't give me that look, I already told you I was going to train you, and yes I was serious about that. So, I will train you how to survive and in return I will give you shelter and 3 good meals a day." That was a strange deal, what exactly did he get out of it? Regardless, I was not prepared to survive out there and I was starting to get used to the free food. I nodded, and he rose from his chair before begging to lead me out the door.

As we entered the great outdoors, he kept up his pace eventually leading me back to the river that I had previously fallen face first into. It was then that I noticed that he brought a bag with him, he put the bag down and opened it up revealing 2 fishing rods, 2 spears, and a large net.

"Today's lesson is about how to obtain one of nature's easiest foods, Fish. This river is a great piece of luck for us not everyone has access to it so we should make the most out of it." He reached into the bag and pulled out the fishing rod he handed to me while he grabbed one for himself. "Now kiddo this one is extremely easy however just because it's easy doesn't mean it works the best."

"I already know how to fish, I used to do it with my dad all the time"

"All right then your assignment for today is catch a nice fish, whatever you end up catching will be your lunch so don't fail or else you will go hungry. With that he headed off down the river and left me. I looked down at the rod, to think I would need to use this to catch something I would eat was such a outlandish thought to me. Previously I had used it for fun, so I had a reason to hang out with my dad. I looked at the rod, what to do first? Oh, I needed bait, I walked around scanning the ground before eventually seeing that Mark left a small box on the ground. Reaching down I picked the box up and opened it, inside was a large group of worms. Disgusting. I picked one up and placed it on the rod. And as soon as I did so it wiggled off onto the ground, I dropped to my knees and frantically searched for it but no luck. Opening the box back up there was 4 more worms left. Okay I kind of needed to not mess up anymore. I picked another worm up and this time tried to tie it around the hook, but the stupid thing was too slippery and slid straight off back into the dirt. Great. I opened the box and grabbed another worm, this time I figured out what I had to do, taking the pointy end of the hook I impaled the worm and then pushed its body on the hook. Now that was done, I looked out at the water. All I had to do was wind up and throw right? I took a step forward and threw the rod back and then forward, finally I had gotten a worm into the water but it was then that I remembered this was a river the current began to pull hard at the rod and it took all my strength just to pull it back to me and when it returned, I noticed that the worm was again gone. Even Better. I walked over to what seemed like a calm part of the river and put my hook in. Now all I needed was for a fish to take my bait. And wait I did, I have no idea how long I sat there but it was a while, eventually my boredom took over and I began calling out "here fishy fishy come to Max" after trying that a couple of times I finally got a tug, I pulled with my entire strength and as hard as I could, and the hook emerged out of the murky depths... with nothing on it. Great Just Great. I had one more chance I couldn't blow this, doing everything over again the worm, throwing in the calm part, and this time remembering that I can reel things in I finally had a plan that would most likely work. Once more I waited and when I felt a tug, I began to reel it in, after a bit of reeling it in I finally lifted and to my happiness there was a fish on the other side. YES. I slowly brought the fish over to land and looked at it hanged from my rod. Its eyes stared into mine as I realized the next step. I would have to kill it, I reached for the knife in the tackle box and brough it up against the fish. How would I even kill it? I didn't know what I was doing. I could just stab it in the eye that would destroy the brain, right? Quick and painless. I stared at the victim to the murder I was about to commit and as I brought the knife to its eye, my humanity or maybe my stupidity kicked in and I cut the line before throwing the fish back in the water. Looking back at the tackle box It was empty, defeated I made my way back to Marks house.
