Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1

Odudu-wa seats outside his house, which was a one-bedroom apartment, it was located in Badagry. He kept on looking into the heavens and missing those days he hanged around his father, he couldn't help but miss the old man even after 7 years of his death, he kept remembering when his father first taught him how to swim, how the old man took him to the river that day and told him he was going to teach him two lessons that day.

"You are slowly becoming a man odudu-wa and today, you will have to start learning about how this life works". Adeleki said as he leads his son by his hands down to the bank of the river, it was 8:00am in the morning and it was still cold.

"Today, you will be taught two lessons and I'll test you to see if you understand, if you are as bright as the men in our family, I'm sure you'll pass". Adeleki smiles to his 9 years old son, who was totally excited to learn how to swim, although he was wondering what the other lesson was going to be but pushed the thought away.

Adeleki starts undressing himself untill he was left with nothing but his little shorts he was wearing inside his trousers, then he asked Odudu-wa to also undress.

Odudu-wa quickly pulled his cloth, reviling his bear body, unlike his father he was fully nude.

Adeleki got on his knees and asked Odudu-wa to get on his back and said to him,

"Lesson number 1, in other to learn how to swim you need to be comfortable in water"

"‍The first step to learning swimming is to be comfortable in the water. I call it "Building the Water Confidence Stage". Just walk to and fro in shallow water, This will help you to get a feel of water."

He started walking into the river with Odudu-wa on his back, he kept walking untill his feet could no longer touch the ground, then he started swimming, on and on until he got to the middle of the river which had a pole, then he spoke to his son.

"Hold on tightly to the pole so you won't sink, so we can start your first lesson".

Odudu-wa quickly grabs the pole before jumping off his father's back, he held on tightly to it so he wouldn't sink.

As soon as Adeleki knew his son was successful on the pole, he said to him.

"Now my boy step two, when you want to start swimming, you need to blow bubbles underwater

"‍This is a fun and important part of breathing. To do this you got to remember when you are above water Breathe IN from your mouth, Hold till you get underwater, and Breathe OUT slowly from your nose as you go underwater."

Adeleki demonstrate as he explains the steps on how to swim to his son.

Odudu-wa kept on holding to the pole tightly as he listens and paid close attention to every word his father said.

" Step three," Adeleki continues," step three is all about Floating there are two types of floating one is just to lay on your back and relax and the second is to put your chest and head down in the water.

the first possion is called relax position and the second possion is called swimming Position this possions are very important in swimming

The key to successful floating is good head position, body position, and relaxation."

"The last step is Kicking

A strong leg kick is an engine that propels you through the water and helps you balance. There are a few different types of leg kicks. The one to learn as a beginner is called Flutter Kick. This can be done above water and when you get in the water.

When you are above water keep your legs straight and just flap them on the water. Make sure you don't bend your knees.

Remember step 2 and step 3 because these are going to be very important in learning Flutter kick. "

"When you go underwater breathe out.

always kick from your hip because this gives a stronger kick and maintains their body alignment.‍"

"‍So always remember Breathing – Floating – Kicking "

"Now watch me closely as I demonstrate how it's done."

As he demonstrates, he swims back to shore leaving Odudu-wa behind, he puts on his clothes and walks away.

Odudu-wa was a little bit shocked, but he had to comport himself and trust his father, he kept telling himself that his father was going to come back for him but after waiting an hour and still no sign of his father, he decided to try putting to use what his father taught him.

Still holding on to the pole he kept on dipping himself into the river and tries breathing, after failing the first few tries he finally started to get a hang of it.

After spending more than an hour mastering the first step he moved on to step two, he kept his grip on the pole firmly as he let's his body float on the water, although he was a little bit scared he knew he had to put himself together in other to accomplish this task.

He starts kicking his legs again and again until he stopped sinking, it was already getting late and the least thing he wanted was to spend the night there.

He slowly let go of the pole, and starts ever step has he was told, to his surprise he was doing it but he couldn't keep it up for long, he was already tired from practicing to actually swim for long.

Halfway through he's journey, he starts sinking, he kicks and kicks but his legs where to weak to kick properly, he was already losing hope when he felt hands on both his arms lifting him from the water.

Fully out of the water odudu-wa could see the person helping him to be his father who came back for him. Adeleki puts his son on his back again and swim for shore.

After they where both on dry land again, Adeleki turns to his son and ask him,

"How many lessons where you taught today???"

Odudu-wa who was tired spoke with a tired voice "2 lessons sir"

"And what are the lessons?" Adeleki asked again.

"Swimming lesson and life lessons" Odudu-wa answered again.

"What and what did you learn from the life lesson??" Adeleki through another question at him again.

"1: I learnt never to trust people fully, no matter who they are because they can get you into problematic situations and leave you at anytime.

2: I learnt that life will not inform you before giving a test and putting you in a hard position, so you have to be prepared at all times and when you are not fully prepared, you have to face every problem with calmness because that's the only way you can think properly.

3: I learnt that when you are in a problem or situation, you should try to help yourself because sometimes someone who wants to help you just wants to see you put effort in helping yourself first before they can help you

Adeleki was proud of his son, and the fact that he was able to understand the important lesson for the day.

"You passed the test, am happy you where able to get the main meaning of today's lesson, we'll start your swimming class tomorrow, properly". He smiles has he helped his son home on his back.

Odudu-wa was amazed at the fact that he's father was standing there behind the trees all along watching if he was going to try to swim before he was going to help him out.

Odudu-wa was still busy lost in his thought of times he spent with his father, when an heavy gust of wind bought him back to reality.

Odudu-wa got up from the seat he was seated, realizing how lonely his life has been yamis's death, he had always wanted to be more successful and better then his father ever was and he finally was but he knew that he will never be fully successful like his father without his better half, without her, he will never be fully successful.
