Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12

"What?"

"Yes. That's how his father recognized you. What else did he say?" my mother asks.

"That's just about it."

This confused me for a minute. What dominant do when they are interested in a woman, they pursue her. So even if Eden was not my mate and he was interested in me, he could already have asked me out. The situation was much confusing though; he was my mate and yet he has constantly pushed me away. He has always been hot and cold with me.

"I thought the mate bond was supposed to be intense and sparks flying everywhere. There's nothing like that that has happened to me and we have seen each other a couple of times"

My grandmother looks sorrowful at me. "It is time we told you everything" my mother looks uneasy. I start to know whatever they are going to tell me is not going to be so good. She nudges me to sit and takes in a heavy breathe.

"My sister, your biological mother was gifted with the power just like you. She was mated to your father who was the alpha of the brotherhood pack and back then things were not as they were right now. She didn't know she had the powers until it was too late."

My grandmother tears up when she speaks "On the day of initiating their mating union, the ritual awakened her powers and she was impeccable. So beautiful. The brotherhood was there too and they saw everything. Your dad, Marcel was an amazing alpha. Well respected but Darroc was envious of him. He wanted to be alpha so bad that he started passing rumors about your mother. That she was a witch and she was influencing the brotherhood through Marcel. Of course this had the elders attention. Both the sisterhood and brotherhood had their differences but had settled for diplomacy because we live together.

The rumor was true; she was a wolf with sorcerers gifts but she was not influencing anything. At that time she was carrying you, expectant. Us wolves we undergo a hard time and is dangerous too when we are expectant. She was really ill and her mate never left her side. So when Darroc rallied all the wolves in the pack against him, it was easy.

They had to duel for the alpha position. We are very protective in nature and any threat of any kind is seen as a challenge. And so they dueled. Your father was the strongest in the whole pack and Darroc was no match for him. He won the duel fair and square."

My mother goes on "That night we were with Mira, your mom; her condition had worsened and we had to conceive you if she wanted to survive the pregnancy. We didn't know Darroc and a few other wolves of the pack had decided to take matters into their own hands. They ambushed your father and were killing him since the earlier duel was a fight to the death. Your father decided to spare Darroc's life only for him to come back and kill him. Your mother saw all this and she couldn't let her mate be killed she helped him, she channeled all her power to Marcel but still Darroc had the upper hand. He killed Marcel"

"Upon seeing this, your mother used all her powers due to the anguish she felt and the power consumed all the werewolves with Darroc. When Darroc saw his soldiers being annihilated by the sheer power of Mira he ran away." Grandmother breaks down.

"When she came down to her senses, she wailed. The pain of losing her husband, her mate was unbearable. It caused her to start losing you so we had to operate to save you. She was in a coma like state during all this but she heard your first cry, she was able to talk."

My grandmother stands up "By then we had heard and I too had felt the power surge so I went to her and that's when we all saw what had happened. She gave birth to you while looking at her Marcel-"

I am so stiff where I am seated I feel the anguish of it all as if I am the one reliving it. My mother goes on

"When she held you she named you Eveline. You look just like her. She then handed you over to Martha. She couldn't live with the anguish and the pain she felt rooted in her, she said. She couldn't live without Marcel. She died later on in her sleep"

Tears are rolling down my cheeks. My mother goes on "And that is why we don't talk about it. I am so sorry Eve, it is still a fresh memory. It still hurts."

"Your mother's last request was to put you in a spell of dormancy. When she was pregnant she already knew who your mate will be and when Darroc killed Marcel she said we cannot let her child mate in a family full of darkness that made her bleed out in pain like she did." My grandmother heaves in a sigh.

"And so we did. That's why we moved from here to New York. With the spell you couldn't turn but every spell has an expiry date. Yours was when you turned seventeen. With the spell was you couldn't detect your mate and vice versa."

She comes and holds me. I sink into her embrace "I didn't- I am-"

"No darling," she comforts me "It's okay. This is hard for you but we are with you. We will always protect you no matter what." She kisses my forehead.

My grandmother stands by the window, her stance one of a warrior, protector "Now that Darroc knows who you are, there is less we can do. I know his son but I cannot say he doesn't mirror his father. It's about time you learnt about your abilities and how to protect yourself. We cannot let history repeat itself."
