When the man pointed a gun at the back of Charles's head, he arose and emerged, cursing and in excruciating pain from his shoulder.
"If something unusual happens, my girlfriend might want to know. She was the last phone number I dialed before I hung up the call." Charles told him to his partner as they walked to the car.
In order to prevent him from driving while injured, his partner instructed him to sit in the passenger seat.
On the heels of being inspected and treated in the emergency department, Charles was also required to make a report about being shot at and hit while on duty. They rode all the way back to the station where they had dropped the suspect. The part of his job that he loathed the least, despite the fact that he didn't get involved in many fires, made him sigh.
