Chapter 1 - Chapter 0, The System

...

"...Where am I?"

A voice says, surrounded by a pitch black void.

He looks around, to find only darkness, and can't help but getting a bit uncomfortable in the mysterious place he finds himself in...

"The last thing I can remember, is a white room... and I was brought there... after I..."

The voice murmurs, trying to remember what happened to him, as vague memories enter his mind. He has some recollection of a distant life, but fails to fully comprehend it. It feels to him like he has forgotten something important...

*pling*

Suddenly, a soft clinging of bells can be heard, as if to notify him, and a screen pops up.

In glowing blue letters, with a simple to read font, it says:

[ Welcome to the System. ]

[ Would you like to start your journey? ]

{ Yes }

{ No }

"Huh?"

The voice is utterly confused as to what just appeared in front of him, and immediately loses track of what he was trying to remember.

He looks at the screen.

"A journey? What does that mean..."

He mutters, then looks around him once again.

The pure endlessness of the space, together with the vague memories makes him feel weirdly nostalgic, but he decides to move on.

"I guess there is no point in declining."

He says, and selects the 'Yes' option.

A new pop-up appears in front of him, as the original one vanishes.

[ Selected 'Yes'. ]

Time passes as the odd screen that calls itself 'the System' freezes in place, and the voice patiently awaits the moment a new screen appears.

All the while, strange memories keep flowing into his head.

'Odd...'

'I can't recall ever doing or experiencing all of that stuff...'

The voice ponders. It irritates him a little.

'I give up.'

He thinks, whilst shrugging the entire thing off...

The voice thinks, unfamiliar with all of these terms.

"So you can read my mind?"

The voice asks, surprised by the sudden intrusion into his thoughts...

But there is no response...

'Alright then... just stay silent about invading my privacy... weird System thingy...'

He thinks, a bit annoyed at the floating screen. Although he is curious to see what the screen has to offer.

[ World Information: ]

────────────────────────────────

[ The World: ]

A world where vast oceans and beautiful yet treacherous lands can be found, It consists of four continents, each with their own unique characteristics...

[ The Continents: ]

By far the largest continent of this world. Its land mostly populated by humans. As there is no space on this continent that humans haven't conquered yet, monsters and dangerous beasts have gone nearly extinct. It is the cause of many wars that arose due to the many nobles that seek power over the conquered lands. Society on this continent is the most intricate of all.

The second largest continent. Walking on these lands are the 'Evil' species, no Humans or 'Good' creatures live on Daenon. The landscape is beautiful, but don't let your eyes deceive you...

The third largest Continent. The lands of Ishamel are imbued with magic, many magical creatures live here. Most of Ishamel remains unexplored, but that may change sooner or later. The monsters on this continent are exceptionally dangerous, so caution is a good trait to have when adventuring on this continent.

Social structures are unique for each of the different species living on Ishamel, but all species that are not monsters or beasts have good relationships with each other.

Smallest of the four continents. The environment of Kaldur is cold and harsh, due to it being the most northern continent. Not many species live here, but the ones that do, are accustomed to this environment, and are almost fully capable of managing on this continent. monsters and beasts have unknown power, as the residents of these lands tend to avoid them...

People of this continent have different customs when it comes to outsiders, some are hostile, some friendly and hospitable.

────────────────────────────────

A wall of information appears in front of the voice.

"That... is a lot of text..."

The voice says, surprised by the sudden screen, and carefully reads it through...

...

"That's... is this the world I am supposed to go to?"

He asks with uncertainty.

[ Correct. ]

Is the reply he gets.

"So I am being reborn...?"

He asks the screen, wondering if it can answer his questions about the 'past life' he somehow has memories from...

[ Unknown. ]

Is the answer this time...

"..."

"Odd..."

The voice mutters, and decides to ignore it.

"And what about the 'User Information'?"

He inquires of the System.

[ Selected 'User Information'. ]

[ Attaining information... ]

[ ... ]

'I'm starting to get the hang of it...!'

The voice thinks with a strong feeling of accomplishment.

[ User Information: ]

────────────────────────────────

[ User: ]

Your character is essentially you, it is how you will appear in the world. There are many different factors to determine your character.

Your Species boosts some capabilities of your character, these special traits are shared with other people of the same Species.

Classes are special positions one can attain by their actions, Classes will boost growth in certain aspects that will be helpful with cultivating the Class in question.

Your level determines how strong you are, it is the representation of all the training you have done and accomplishments you have made in life.

it is raised by gaining sufficient EXP, rewarded by quests, eliminating monsters or beasts, some titles and more.

Titles can boost some Stats by a fixed amount, grant EXP, and certain Titles are also capable of affecting the attitude of certain people towards you.

Stats determine how capable you are in certain aspects. These are displayed as numbers.

Skills are certain actions, that are stored within the System, for quick and easy access. Skills can be obtained by learning them, or by creation.

Another wall of text appears...

"okay... I probably need this, so I better start reading..."

The voice sighs. And he reluctantly scans through the screen...

After having read the information that is displayed in the glowing letters, he notices something.

"So it's like some kind of game...?"

The voice asks the screen, reminiscing one of his distant memories, unable to determine where it came from...

[ Correct. ]

Is the reply to the confused voice.

"Aha..."

"..."

"Say... can one obtain multiple classes?"

The voice asks. He tries to forget about the odd memory that suddenly popped into his head, just now.

[ Correct, but it is very difficult. ]

The screen replies.

"And how about titles?"

He adds, determined to squeeze as much information as he possibly can from the screen.

[ Correct, you can obtain multiple titles. ]

Is the answer.

"alright, thanks!"

The voice exclaims, and he takes a look at the options he has remaining.

"There is only one option left... so please show me the 'System Information', and get this over with."

The voice utters to the pop-up in front of him.

You can directly access The System by simply speaking or thinking its name, followed by an inquiry. However, keep in mind that The System is not omnipotent, and may fail the user at times.

The System displays terms in a certain way, using a 'bracket-system', this system allows the user to quickly determine the power or rarity of a certain entity or object. a quick guide is given below:

The voice declares to the System.

[ Attempting to choose ... ]

"huh? attempting?"

The voice is left confused, thinking that he could unconditionally choose any species...

[ Attempt failed. ]

The screen with glowing red letters baffles the voice, leaving him furious.

"Then why give the option in the first place?!"

He asks, indignant.

The System leaves him unanswered.

"Alright then..."

The voice says, and he reads through the list once more.

"System... What exactly is the difference between an Angel, and a Heavenly Envoy...?"

He asks, trying to assess his options with every single bit of knowledge he can obtain.

The voice asks, unacquainted with the new term.

"That did close to, if not, nothing..."

The voice replies, frustrated. He is left curious as to what it could possibly be...

Eventually, curiosity gets the better of him.

"Why not, i select 'Reaper'."

He adds after a short moment of wonder.

*pling*

[ Attempting to choose 'Reaper'... ]

'I wonder if i succeed this time...'

The voice thinks, excited to see what the result is.

[ Attempt Successful. ]

The screen shows with glowing green letters, it catches the voice off guard.

"Ah, i thought so, let me try anothe-"

The voice says, thinking that the attempt has failed again, before realizing that he was wrong.

"..."

"Hold on, it actually worked?!"

He replies with surprise.

*pling*

[ Do you wish to continue? ]

The question floats in front of an uncertain voice, he is unsure of what to do.

Eventually, he decides to move on, and simply risk it.

"Sure, although I still lack an explanation of what a Reaper actually is..."
