The small amount of security that I managed to still on Claire all faded out when we came back to the table…
She froze for a minute looking at the empty seat next to Kyle.
Instead of sitting and leaving her to deal with the nerves, I stood next to her and patted her arm softly while I spoke to the boys more than to her.
"Claire is feeling a little sick from the drive, Kyle, maybe you can accompany her outside for a few minutes to catch some air? I think it might do her some good." And with this, I turned to look at her encouragingly but there was a hint of panic in her eyes.
"Oh! Sure, if you think that will help, Claire." Kyle was quick to politely agree.
And as he stood up, I whispered as softly as I could: "Relax, being alone can be good, you don't have to talk, just enjoy the company." As I squeezed her arm sympathetically.
