Pete had the most difficult drive in his life with how much he had to pretend to be listening to Lilly's rambling on their way home while his head was with Rosa. He needed to see her. It has been a while since she had to hide her face from her own daughter. And he worried about the fact that Robert had been changing the helpers in the mansion. It was so unusual for him to do.
"Pete, can you drop me off at the coffee shop near the university?"
"Yes, I think you should talk to your mother—" He stopped and jerked his shoulder because Lilly hit him with her fist.
"You are not listening to me, Petey! I've been talking like crazy and you're like a mechanical robot giving me a one-line answer that was accompanied by grunts. What's wrong with you?"
"Sorry about that," he grinned, trying to downplay him getting caught not listening. "I was thinking of something else."
