Synopsis

Born a Spy

Our story begins in the summer of 1920.

Jazz was in, and so was segregation. The rich, white and wealthy were all oblivious to the chaos and horrors we as colored people faced. Not all was bad though at least not for some. Wealth doubled and the young youth was roaring. More Americans lived in cities than urban towns and farms. Women were finally allowed to vote, and the horror of the Spanish flu was finally coming to an end.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Let's go back to March 5th, the beginning of the 19th century.

I was born on a bitter winter on a shipping boat crossing the Atlantic. My mother and father were leaving Russia for a life of simplicity and to grow their family. My mother was a Spaniard and my father was a Russian.

We ended up somewhere in Massachusetts. I had already been born by the time we arrived at the nearest hospital, the stress of birth was enough to take my mother from me and my family.

Her death changed everything.

I have 2 older brothers, Alvaro and Maximo. After my 10th birthday, we were separated. Father said it was for the best. Alvaro was sent to Spain and Maximo departed to Scotland.

He said Maximo would become a man worthy in the eyes of a Russian.Alvaro was too delicate and sweet, he didn't have what it took so he'd be sent to Spain, our mother's home country.

"You won't be of any use to me" is what my father said.

Later he sent me to boarding school in London. After that my father homeschooled me and I learned everything from foreign politics to one on one combat training. He said fluency was key so I studied. French, Latin, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Italian, Japanese, Slavic anything related to Russian allies or enemies really.

He left no stone unturned, forced to learn the ins and outs of the human mind and perceive their next move. At 15 I finally understood what all this was for.

In a moment one's world can change

can crumble,

Shatter,

Disappear.

Mine?

I realized I never had one, born an outcast, separated from my blood, no place to call home, just to be raised as some pawn in my father's game of chess.

My ultimate mission.

To be his spy.

He was always vague, yet one thing he said was clear: one day I'd have to go back to Russia and save him.

He can save himself, he's plenty capable, I'm done sitting around waiting for his direction. Now that I'm of age I'm leaving this place, I'll go search for my brothers to make a new life away from this one.

My plan was simple; At sundown, I would go to the creek and board a shipping boat. I'll board to Europe, from there to Scotland, and then Spain. I left my bed for the last time, fixed my coat, grabbed my bow and hunting gear.

Entering the dining room was like walking into Hades lair. Father was sitting reading the newspaper on women's rights to vote.

"Father, a word."

"What." His voice was void of emotion as he continued to read.

"I'm of an age now, I'm leaving to find my brothers." my voice may not have been that confident but I wasn't backing down.

He looked up from his paper, face unreadable as he said "Women have the right to vote now" " Let's hope it doesn't go to their heads."

"It's a shame you'll be leaving just when I was starting to see improvement in your training .

"He smirked and went back to reading."

"I will never need your acceptance or approval anymore, I've always thought something was wrong with me but it turns out you are what is so wrong.

May God be with you." "Goodbye Father"

My body moved on its own accord as I left the house, the street, the small town I'd hoped to never see again.

Now I was truly and utterly alone.

My name is Tatyana and this is my story.
