For several consecutive days, Cherish Turner found herself continually haunted by his deep voice. The four words, like a nightmare, she had been reliving over and over again. Every day, there would be an international call from William Griffith. Most of the time, he called her after work.
It seemed that he didn't want to disturb her during work.
Their conversations were always succinct, with basic exchanges such as "Have you eaten?" or "What are you doing now?" After a few sentences, he would lower his voice and say, "I'm going to hang up now," and terminate the call without hesitating. And she didn't push for more conversation, didn't ask him why he hadn't come back yet.
